POSITION TITLE: SCHOOL BUS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN LEVEL II (MULTIPLE POSITIONS)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This is an expert-level Diesel and Gas position which is responsible for repairs to all aspects of vehicles including but not limited to: diagnosing and repairing school buses under minimal supervision. Repairs will include Preventative Maintenance inspections and repairs, air and hydraulic brake repairs, tire repairs, warranty procedures, driveline, steering & suspension, electrical trouble-shooting, AC, refrigeration, overheads, overhauls & rebuilds of engines and transmissions, Complies with Safety and compliance procedures and continues to learn new technology in advanced diagnostics, internal engine and transmission repairs. Completes other duties as assigned including assisting other Technicians in repairs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Direct communication with Maintenance Manager on technical and shop management functions.

  • Diagnoses malfunctions and performs vehicle repairs could include but not limited to: adjust/test steering, electrical, cooling, lubricating, braking systems, drive trains, suspensions, power steering units, clutches, transmissions and oil, temperature, gas regulating components, adjust/test/rebuild engines etc.

  • Performs road calls and on the road repairs as assigned.

  • Ensures proper work methods and techniques and ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State/Provincial and local regulations, requirements, standards and specifications and company policies.

  • Test-drives vehicles to ensure problem resolution.

  • Ensures the maintenance of a clean, safe, effective and efficient work environment including Identifying and making recommendations to resolve unsafe maintenance conditions or practices.

  • Maintains work, time and material and equipment maintenance logs and records for self.

  • Advises Shop Manager, Shop Supervisor or Lead Tech of unsafe maintenance conditions or practices and/or vehicle abuse.

  • Provides advice, guidance and/or hands on assistance to semi-skilled or unskilled technicians with repairs they are not familiar with to ensure high quality.

  • Prepares, completes and submits paperwork on time and correctly on vehicle maintenance.

  • Optimizes maintenance cycle time and ensuring that the shop meets or exceeds customer requirements.

  • Records local maintenance work orders and local parts inventory.

  • Complies with parts inventory processes maintained and used in the facility.

  • Complies with work processes and practices and identifies and recommends opportunities for improvements.

  • Meets and or exceeds quality maintenance metrics within the shop including quality of repair and shop cleanliness.

  • Act as advocate for safe practices.

  • Other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills.

  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects.

  • Proficiency in the use of testing equipment and other hand and power tools.

  • Knowledge of all applicable codes, regulations and laws.

  • Ability to mount, dismounts and repair tires on all types and sizes of vehicles within specified time limits.

  • Ability to Perform Emission certifications in accordance with the Albuquerque/ Bernalillo County Vehicle Pollution Management Program (VPMD).

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma (GED equivalent) or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Must be 20 years of age.

  • Possession of the required certification for the assigned location by a recognized certifying agency

  • US - Certification by the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) testing; OR

  • two years of vocational training; OR

  • Three years' experience in automotive or truck technical repair while obtaining above certifications within one year of employment

  • Valid appropriate licenses and/or certification required to operate company vehicles in assigned location must be obtained within 90 days a CDL with P&S endorsements.

  • Valid Air Brake certification must be obtained within 90 days
