Bakersfield City School District is currently accepting applications for School Bus Driver Trainee sponsorship. To become sponsored for behind the wheel training an online application must be submitted along with all the documents listed under the Minimum Application Requirements below.


  • Ability to learn mechanical operation of bus

  • Ability to learn traffic and school bus regulations

  • Possession of Type I school bus driver's license (district may provide appropriate training for license)

  • Physical condition and emotional stability to drive bus with 50-90 children in appropriate manner

  • Ability to follow oral and written directions

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with staff, students, and parents

  • Completion of 20 hours classroom training (TO-1) and passage of initial qualifying state examination

  • Must pass required tests

REPORTS TO: Administrator as assigned

JOB GOAL: To learn to transport students to and from school and on extracurricular activities in safe and efficient manner


EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the District's "Improvement of Professional Services" handbook, Board Policies and Procedures and consistent with collective bargaining agreements when applicable


  • Current TO-1 Card (Classroom Training)

  • Original H-6 DMV printout (dated within 30 days) - This must be brought to Human Resources

  • Class B permit

  • Medical Examination Report Form

  • Medical Examiner's Certificate

  • Resume (10 year work history)

This sponsorship in no way constitutes an assurance that the applicant will be hired as an employee of the District upon completion of the training requirements.

Some positions may require proof of privately owned automobile insurance and the possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle operator's license. Fingerprint clearance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice is a condition of appointment after all other required job conditions have been met. Must present verification of completion of Child Abuse Mandated Reporter training or obtain verification within six (6) weeks of hire and annually thereafter, as required by the California Child Abuse Neglect Reporting Act.

Transports students on special trips and athletic events. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: * Drives a regular or specially equipped school bus daily over designated and special routes in compliance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students, and, drives for special events. * Inspects bus prior to operation for safety purposes. Cleans windshields and headlights. Cleans the interior and exterior of buses as needed, including, but not limited to, picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, and wiping and cleaning upholstery. * Services bus with fuel and oil. Performs routine checks of belts, braking, turning signals, and lighting. Inspects hydraulic lifts. Reports problems or equipment malfunctions. * Maintains appropriate behavior among students on buses and while the bus is parked at bus stops. Follows District policies regarding the student control and contact with parents and the public. * Reports incidents affecting the safety of students. Maintains records of all trips. Files accident reports. Completes accurate records as required by State and federal laws and policies. * Performs first aid or emergency assistance. * Attends scheduled safety meetings and continuing education programs. * May transport students and chaperons on field trips to various locations making departure and arrival time as scheduled. * Cleans and performs minor repairs to buses such as mending seats, removing graffiti and disinfecting passenger areas. * Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position. Qualifications: * Knowledge and Skills: * Requires a complete working knowledge and understanding of safe bus driving practices sufficient to recognize problems and take appropriate action. Requires working knowledge of the operations of specially equipped buses. Requires working knowledge and understanding of State laws, rules and regulations and Education Code sections pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation, including those for students requiring accommodations. Requires knowledge of routine equipment servicing. Requires knowledge first aid practices. Requires sufficient knowledge of English language to prepare travel and safety logs and prepare work orders. Requires sufficient communication skills to exercise patience and maintain harmony within a work team and with students and parents. * Abilities: * The position requires the ability to perform all of the duties of the position with minimal supervision. Requires ability to drive a school bus safely and efficiently while keeping to well-established schedules. Requires the ability to read and write sufficiently to perform all of the duties of the position including understanding applicable laws, regulations and codes required. Requires the ability to use special devices and equipment for the transport of students with mobility problems.
