TITLE: SCHOOL BEHAVIORAL COUNSELOR DRAFT COPY

DEPARTMENT: School

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Arizona Dept. of Education School Counselor Certificate

  • Must possess a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

JOB GOAL:

The School Behavioral Counselor performs a variety of tasks to help students overcome social/emotional and behavioral problems and promote integration in a school setting that is conducive to learning.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following tasks are essential for this position. This list is not inclusive of all responsibilities. Individuals may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed.

  • Complies with all HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.

  • Develops positive relations with students, parents, school staff and the public.

  • Provide Social/emotional counseling for students aimed at increasing positive behavioral patterns and increasing academic performance while decreasing negative behavioral incidents.

  • Be a resource person for school staff on techniques for decreasing self-defeating student behavior in the school setting.

  • Present age appropriate mini-lessons on current areas of interest for students, such as Restorative Practices.

  • Develop a resource file for use by staff.

  • Provide classroom and small group developmental activities (e.g., self esteem, problem solving, decision making).

  • Participate in the Child Study Team IEP meetings, the Multi Disciplinary Conference Team (MDC), and the Safety Committee.

  • Develop and implement behavioral improvement plans to enhance student success.

  • Promote parents' understanding of academic progress, behavior, growth, and development of their student(s).

  • Help resolve student-teacher conflicts.

  • Provide in-service training as needed.

  • Consult about class interaction, student needs, and staff/student relationships.

  • Take an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.

  • Facilitate special interest programs as needed, such as parenting groups and/or student support groups.

  • Monitor students' progress (e.g., academic, attendance, behavior, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action that supports an increase in student success.

  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Principal/Assistant Principal.

  • Be an active member of the school site crisis response team.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of:

  • District policies, operations and organization.

  • Interpersonal skills including tact, courtesy and diplomacy.

  • Communication (telephone, email, etc.) etiquette.

  • Educational theories and practices.

  • Federal and state laws, rules and regulations governing education.

  • Knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA.

  • District curricula, assessment, and instructional programs.

  • Promoting positive public relations.

  • Technology in the educational context.

  • Crisis management procedures.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Work cooperatively with others.

  • Maintain organized records and files.

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Operate a computer effectively.

  • Regularly required to talk or listen.

  • Frequently is required to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time.

  • Occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • May be required to work at a video display terminal for prolonged periods.

REPORTS TO: Principal

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Principal in accordance with the provisions of Governing Board policy for evaluation of certified personnel.

TERMS OF

EMPLOYMENT: 9 Months

SALARY: Salary for the position is set according to the Related Services Salary Schedule determined by the Governing Board.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt
