School Age Childcare Leader

General Summary

This position is responsible to lead and supervise children in the BASE Afterschool Program and our School's Out Day Camp Program. Duties include providing direction, guidance, and assistance to students; effectively handling student discipline situations; ensuring student safety and security; communicating with parents, staff, participants, and program coordinator; opening, closing, and securing the building; preparing snacks; cleaning program areas; recording attendance; assisting sick or injured children; assisting with supervision of staff; and creating new activities in the areas of crafts, sports, games, STEM activities, and age-appropriate instruction for children ages 5 to 12 years old.

Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire and have 460 verified hours of working with children.

Essential Functions

The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

• Facilitate, supervise, guide, and assist students during crafts, art projects, games, and other activities to provide developmental stimulation and meet their needs.

• Monitor student behavior during activities, effectively handle student discipline situations and encourage and support positive behavior.

• Observe the children and always monitor the security of the building to ensure the children's health and safety. Provide general First Aid and distribute medication to children as directed.

• Comply with state licensing requirements under the direction of the program coordinator.

• Create interesting and educational lesson plans and implement the activities while engaging in participation with the children.

• Communicate with parents, staff, and supervisors regarding children and/or program issues.

• Record attendance and contact parents regarding absent students. Check the identification of those picking up children.

• Prepare and keep an inventory of snacks and clean the areas after use.

• Open and close program/building rooms and secure rooms/building at the end of the program by locking doors and turning off lights.

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of first aid techniques. Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of instructional and recreational program/curriculum development. Basic knowledge of group and individual recreation activities and of their rules and conducts. Working knowledge of varied recreational equipment and its usefulness and limitations concerning diversified recreational programs.

SKILL: Skill in understanding and responding to customer needs. Skill in the operation of program equipment. Skill in the operation of copier and fax machine, telephone, mobile or two-way radio, and various sports equipment used in recreation programs. Skill in administering First Aid and CPR.

ABILITY: Swim and participate with children in swimming related activities; maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job; manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions; manage multiple priorities; diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations; promote and follow City and Department policies and procedures; communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds; recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate staff.

Special Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire and have 460 verified hours of working with children.

• Criminal background check is required for hire. Reference checks will be conducted.

• Driving Positions - Must be 18 years of age with a valid driver's license and a good driving record.

• CPR/AED, First Aid, and Universal Precautions certifications are required within 30 days of hire.
