Receives orders, verifies enough information to schedule exams, checks for insurance eligibility and may request insurance authorization. The use of multiple software programs is required to facilitate the orders. Excellent communication skills are required for this position. A scheduler may be on the telephone many hours of the day.


Education Background

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Some college course work preferred.

Licensure, Registration, Certification

  • None required

Special Training/Skills

  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology and anatomy preferred.

  • Able to work in a high volume, fast paced work environment and perform and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Good communication, organization, customer service, and public relations skills.

  • Typing: 25 wpm with accuracy required, verified via pre-employment testing.

  • Other computer skills: Data entry skills required.

Work Experience

  • Requires at least two years of relevant clerical or customer service experience (preferably in a hospital or clinic setting).

  • Prefer 1 year scheduling experience.

Physical Abilities

  • Must be able to move freely about the department and hospital.

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.

Center on Human Development and Disability has an outstanding opportunity for a Patient Services Specialist 2. Under general supervision coordinates daily patient flow and provide support services in registration at the CHDD specialty clinics. RESPONSIBILITIES * Register patients by obtaining and verifying demographic and financial information through interviews with patients, family members, friends or other healthcare providers; * Schedule new and returning patients on a computerized appointment system; perform preliminary patient screening to establish patient appointment needs. * Act upon patients requests for appointments/cancellations, and referrals. * Verify patient eligibility, registration information and insurance status. Update information when appropriate. Monitor student database. * Collects co-pays, issues receipts, and post payments and reconciles receipts as necessary. * Obtain necessary signatures of consent for treatment, telephone consents, special consents and other documents, financial agreement, assignment of benefits and release of information. * Enter patient information in computerized registration system. * Answer a multi-line phone system, direct calls and take accurate messages. * Perform data entry for entering clinical charges and word processing to create documents such as letters, memos and reports as necessary. * Assist in preparation and maintenance of provider and clinic schedules. * Maintain knowledge of clinic policies and procedures and attend required in-services. * Provide other assistance to the office. * Scan insurance information into patient records. * Monitor E-care activity and make changes to schedule per patient request/needs. * Demonstrates behaviors that support the UW Medicine Patient's Are First Service Culture Guidelines MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High School graduation or equivalent AND one year of experience in a health care setting OR three years of general office or customer services experience OR equivalent education/experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * Experience in handling multiple demands. * Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience with multi-line telephone systems. PC or PC-compatible computer experience using a variety of software programs. * Able to work accurately and attend to details while responding to multiple work demands. * Ability and willingness to work with a diverse staff and patient population. DESIRED: * Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize a high volume of work with attention to detail. * Knowledge of medical terminology. * Experience with EPIC software (electronic appointment and registration system). Equivalent education/experience can substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
