Scenic Designer/Shop Supervisor (Part-Time)

Position Purpose:

This position exists for the two-fold purpose of providing a high level of coordination of people and activities in support of the Theatre Department of Concordia University and to extend the knowledge and experience of the students in the scene shop. This role requires planning, follow through, and communication coordination experience including managing students and materials.

This position is part-time/contracted.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates and communicates with the Director of Theatre, show directors, designers, and other creatives to design, create, and/or obtain (buy/rent/borrow) scenery and props for 2-3 mainstage shows, and to support other student-directed productions.

  • Helps manage and train a crew of students (paid & practicum students, and volunteers), with assistance from student shop supervisors.

  • Works alongside student workers to construct scenery and props that meet production, safety, and quality expectations.

  • Creates and/or obtains (buy/rent/borrow) scenery and props within the required show deadlines and budget expectations, including creating and coordinating the set production calendar, shop scheduling, inventory management, and shop and storage maintenance.

  • Maintains materials inventory and machinery/tool functionality.

  • Communicates with interested parties to secure stock prop and scenery items for rent and to arrange rental returns and any necessary payments.

  • Assists the Scenery, Lighting, and Sound course by teaching class students about scene shop tools and techniques and monitoring required shop hours.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education-

  • BA or BFA in theatre or other woodworking/construction-related field

Experience-

  • Working with lumber, scene shop tools/equipment, painting supplies, and related materials.

  • Familiarity with the history of scenic styles and patterns, including interior and exterior design, furniture, and smaller items.

  • Familiarity with scenic construction and painting for theatre preferred.

  • Training workers (including students) to use scene shop/painting equipment and to work on individual and group construction projects.

  • Communicating/Collaborating with staff at production meetings.

Specialized Knowledge-

  • Knowledge of safety and OSHA standards.

Preferences-

  • Knowledge of the Lutheran Missouri Synod, and values and beliefs aligned with the Lutheran Missouri Synod.
