Scene Shop Supervisor (Teaching and Learning Academic Support 2- MR07)

Anticipated Hiring Salary: $41,000 - $45,000

The Scene Shop Supervisor supervises theatre studios and labs; assists faculty with faculty instruction of production labs; maintains studio/lab equipment and supplies; supervises students and student assistants in theatres and scenic studio spaces; promotes safe working environment in scenery and lighting studios; helps students read and interpret ground plans, elevations, and other scaled construction drawings; builds from technical drawings; supervises students in proper tool usage and organization (materials, props, set pieces); schedules shop deadlines; and meets production deadlines in a timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Monitoring of Safety Standards in Theatre Labs

Has a working knowledge of industry safety protocols and is able to identify safety issues in a timely manner; resolves issues regarding safety immediately as they appear in theatre labs; ensures students know how to use tools and equipment in labs in a safe and proper manner; maintains flammables cabinet according to University and OSHA protocols; ensures proper ingress and egress of labs at all times; is able to multi-task in lab environment.

Oversee/Carryout Lab Preparations

Maintains a working plan of what each lab and its students need to complete each day; prepares labs with proper equipment before student arrival; collaborates with production faculty and attends design and production meetings as necessary; provides educational, technical, and mechanical assistance to all classes with sessions in the Scene Shop and Ward Theatre; procurement of new tools, screws, etc.; reads ground plans, elevations, etc. and gathers all needed materials to execute each drawing to scale; oversees maintenance of equipment such as, but not limited to, saws, power tools, forklift, and theatrical properties to ensure they are in good, working condition when needed; provides technical assistance for non-departmental clients using the Ward Theatre or the Lewis Studio Theatre, including during the summer.

Supervise Student Workers and Work Study Students

Gives direction to student workers and work study students (student workers) regarding daily tasks and continuing projects; approves student workers' time for payment and/or class credit; follows University and Departmental policy for timekeeping and similar duties; maintains a working knowledge of policies regarding student workers.

Assist Faculty in Monitoring Student Lab Activity

Effectively communicates with faculty members in all matters, especially in regard to student worker performance and function; helps to monitor all lab equipment; reports major issues to appropriate faculty member(s) in a timely manner.

Maintain Equipment and Supplies

Anticipates what is needed for the tasks at hand and future tasks; ensures commonly used items are kept in good stock; procures new equipment and supplies as necessary; maintains inventory of lumber stock and knows what needs to be procured; understands University procurement policy and has knowledge of relevant procurement contracts.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Advanced knowledge of carpentry, welding, and theatrical rigging

  • Understanding of theatre performance practices.

  • Working knowledge of technical systems (i.e. lighting consoles, sound consoles, theatrical lights, etc.).

  • Experience as a carpenter, master carpenter, or assistant technical director on theatrical productions.

  • Previous experience working with students.

  • Organizational multi-tasking and superior oral/written communication skills.

Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or GED and five years of relevant experience (theatrical carpentry experience).

Preferred qualifications: Bachelor's degree and five years of experience in theatre/arts carpentry or served as a Master Carpenter. Welding experience. Familiarity with sound and lighting equipment. Experience as Assistant Technical Director.
