Satellite Software Engineer

Job Description:

ORBCOMM is seeking a highly motivated Satellite Software Engineer to join a small engineering team to support the operations of the ORBCOMM LEO satellite constellation. The Satellite Software Engineer will be responsible for the development, testing, debugging, and modification of embedded flight satellite software to improve satellite operations, develop new capabilities, correct any on-orbit anomalies, and extend the operational life of the satellites. The candidate will also be responsible for the maintenance and new development of a big data software satellite data archiving system. The candidate should be experienced in the cross-platform development of embedded software in C and C++ in environments with high software reliability requirements. The position will work closely with the Space Segment satellite engineer team and will report to the Principal Satellite Software Engineer.


  • Present flight software designs to systems engineering audiences

  • Perform telemetry analysis to evaluate health and performance of satellites

  • Develop operational deployment plans for flight software modifications

  • Implement flight software requirements using C and C++ to execute on VxWorks and Linux target platforms

  • Develop and modify VxWorks and Linux shell scripts used for ground and flight operations

  • Develop and modify test software using appropriate frameworks for both VxWorks and Linux environments

  • Maintain and develop new big data satellite archiving functionality

  • Manage software source code, changes, testing, and releases utilizing Apache Subversion, Trac, and CruiseControl


  • BS in Computer Science or related discipline with 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Ability to work independently in a small team environment

  • Experience with VxWorks RTOS and embedded software development in C/C++ required

  • Experience with Apache Accumulo, Kafka, and Storm desired

  • Experience with Linux system administration, Javascript, Python, Django and virtualization desired
