Hiring range is from $39,750.00 to $52,775

This is skilled work in the operation and maintenance of sanitation vehicles, mostly clam shell trucks (Residential) and front load trucks (Commercial) and the supervising of collection crews when authorized.

Examples of Duties

1.Safely operates a sanitation vehicle. Uses hydraulic controls to complete workload safely.

Assists in the collection and loading of solid waste, trash, junk, yard waste and recyclables. Adverse weather conditions are involved. This task is performed regardless of weather conditions, except in extreme cases.

Protective weather gear is provided. Sanitation Workers are assigned to different collection routes and are occasionally part of a two-person crew. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

For Commercial Sanitation

  • Will operate front-end loaders to service dumpsters beginning at 3:00am five days per week. Operator is responsible for opening gates, unlocking locks, closing dumpster lids, and always maintaining awareness of surroundings. Operator must enter and exit vehicle multiple times a day.

For Residential Sanitation

  • Will operate clam shell (or grapple) trucks to pick up yard waste, debris piles, bulky items, pallets and other miscellaneous items starting at 7:00am four days per week. Operator enters and exits vehicle multiple times a day and is responsible for raking especially with yard waste.

    May be assigned to operate a side loader using hand controls to pick up garbage carts automatically. There is limited entering and exiting the truck daily except to pick up small items or bags. May also be assigned to operate a rear loader which would involve driving and working on the back of the truck.

    This will involve entering and exiting the truck many times during the day when driving. When working on the back of the truck it will include climbing up and down onto a step and riding on the step. Manual labor includes picking up miscellaneous items and throwing them into the back of the truck or pulling carts to the truck to empty into the back of the truck using tippers. Picking up yard waste will include raking and the use of pitch forks or shovels to place yard waste into the back of the truck.

2.Supervises collection crews when designated. At such time, may be required to use independent judgment to adjust work schedules and priorities to meet customer and supervisor demands.

3.Responsible for addressing customer complaints. Will make decisions to satisfy complaints or will contact a supervisor to address the complaints. Will report any violations of refuse collection regulations to supervisor verbally or through the use of a tablet with work order software.

4.Responsible for the cleaning, washing and maintenance of assigned vehicle both inside and outside. Includes using gas operated steam pressure washers and long brushes to clean trucks. May also involve the use of hoes, shovels, and water hoses as well.

5.Responsible for daily safety inspections of assigned vehicles including both pre-trip and post-trip inspections and the completion of the Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports. Any issues that are reported that require repairing, truck should be taken to Fleet with supervisor approval.

6.Responsible for using tablets daily. Work orders are assigned, completed and created through the use of tablets equipped with work order software.

7.Communicates clearly and courteously on the radio or in person with supervisors and coworkers and with the general public. This also includes times when the use of a phone is necessary.

8.Responsible for providing support for departmental or city-wide special events before, during, and after the event in the areas and for the functions relative to essential job duties and/or otherwise assigned.

9.Responsible for reporting to work following any emergency events to work as directed and as scheduled.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of six months experience in heavy manual labor and/or driving and operating a sanitation vehicle. Experience operating a grapple truck preferred (Residential). Ability to operate a standard shift vehicle is preferred. Must be able to comprehend, record and complete route reports and work orders.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements and maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.

Commercial- front load container (dumpster) operations, fork truck container operations, etc. Involves manipulation of various joy sticks, buttons, handles, and levers necessary to operate the hydraulic arms and various devices to service commercial containers.

Residential- clam shell (grapple) operations including the boom and the bucket, etc. Involves manipulation of various joy sticks, buttons, handles, and levers necessary to operate the hydraulic arms and various devices to pick up yard waste piles, debris piles, bulk items and pallets from the ground and load them into the truck body.
