Level 1 - $4,800.66 - $5,836.00/month

Under close supervision, the Sanitation District Mechanic Level I/II performs a variety of mechanical duties in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems involved in wastewater treatment and conveyance; including operation of wastewater, storm water, and recycled water pumping stations; potable water wells and treatment facilities; chemical handling systems; oxygen injection systems; hydraulic power systems and hydro-pneumatic systems; and the maintenance and operation of stationary and portable diesel driven electrical generation systems.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance, construction, repair, and operation of complex mechanical equipment, such as pumps, motors, multi-reduction gearboxes, and hydraulic and pneumatic systems

  • Basic principles of operation of pumps, motors, valves, and associated equipment

  • Basic welding techniques and practices

Ability to:

  • Learn to troubleshoot and repair mechanical equipment

  • Learn to use precision tools

  • Learn fundamentals of chain and socket assemblies, gas compressors, electronically, pneumatically, and hydraulically controlled valves, chemical handling and oxygen injection systems, and associated equipment

  • Learn lubrication requirements of pumps and motors

  • Learn to read and interpret basic maps, diagrams, instruction manuals, plans, and blueprints; maintain records

  • Learn principles, practices, and safety precautions for confined space entry

  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions

  • Maintain courteous and effective relationships with fellow employees and the public

  • Perform skilled and semiskilled, hard physical labor

  • Work standby and respond to emergency calls

  • Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance

  • Use computer equipment and related peripheral equipment to enter and extract information

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Either: 1. One year of full-time paid experience employed by the County of Sacramento in the class of Building Maintenance Worker, Maintenance Worker, or Maintenance Helper.

Or: 2. One year of full-time paid experience in general mechanical maintenance or construction.

Note: If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

Age Requirement: Applicants must be 18 years of age prior to date of appointment due to the hazards of the job, as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Criminal History and Background Checks:

The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks, credit history checks where authorized by Labor Code section 1024.5, Social Security Number verification, professional license/registration verification, military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. In obtaining such information, the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.

License Requirement: A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required at the time of appointment. Some positions in this class may require a valid California Driver License, Class B or higher, that included special endorsements including, but not limited to, the Tank Vehicle Endorsement issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate California Driver License may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Certification Requirement: A valid California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Mechanical Technologist Grade 1 certificate is required within one year of appointment. Failure to obtain and maintain the required certification may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement.

Physical Requirements:

Some positions in this class require the incumbent to be able to:

  • Perform strenuous manual labor.

  • Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.

  • Stand on a ladder while performing tasks with both hands.

  • Lift heavy equipment and tools weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance; lift heavier items with assistance.

  • Frequently bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach above the shoulder.

  • Frequently push/pull equipment, materials, or supplies weighing up to 100 pounds; move heavier items with assistance.

  • Work in areas with unsteady footing.

  • Enter, exit, and work in enclosed and confined spaces, such as 24 and 36-inch maintenance access holes.

  • Wear respiratory protection.

  • Demonstrate color vision sufficient to distinguish the colors on a computer screen that indicate equipment status and conditions.

Individuals who do not meet these requirements due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Working Conditions:

Some positions in this class require the incumbent to:

  • Work in enclosed areas where the temperature may exceed 100 degrees F or reach lows below 20 degrees F.

  • Enter, exit, and work in enclosed and confined spaces, such as 24 and 36-inch maintenance access holes.

  • Work in trenches up to 23 feet, or more, in depth.

  • Work on uneven terrain and outside in all types of weather conditions including inclement or hot conditions.

  • Work around dust, dirt, noise, and odors.

  • Work in areas with unsteady footing.

  • Work in hip boots during muddy conditions.

  • Work shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and standby.

Probationary Period:

The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12)months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.

This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.

All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
