Position summary: Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has approximately 25,000 30,000 annual visitors, all coming through the Welcome Center as their first stop to enter the world of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. The Sanctuary Ambassador is the first point of contact and they play an integral role in welcoming our visitors and discussing with them the options at hand for a glimpse into our life saving work. The Sanctuary Ambassador is informed and up to date on all Sanctuary happenings, Best Friends mission and any new developments on the horizon. The Sanctuary Ambassador is responsible for providing our visitors with a quality experience through informative and engaging tours of the Sanctuary at the highest level, which is meant to be informative, interactive and entertaining. The Ambassador understands without a doubt the link between our culture and mission and the important role it plays in helping inspire and influence our visitors to join us in our life saving work to Save Them All.

Essential Duties:

  • Greet all Best Friends visitors in a warm and inviting manner, both in the Welcome Center and across the Sanctuary.

  • Conduct scripted tours of the Sanctuary as well as specialized mini-tours and/or talks pertaining to Best Friends and our surroundings.

  • Invite and encourage all visitors to become members and donors of Best Friends Animal Society.

  • Engage visitors in the Welcome Center reception area and provide accurate information and direction as it pertains to their requests.

  • Manage all duties associated with reception at the Welcome Center, including but not limited to, answering phone calls, scheduling tours, checking in overnight guests, handling relinquishment of animals, receiving donations, providing assistance with Welcome Center technology and contacting and coordinating with other departments across the Sanctuary.

  • Participate in local and regional events to increase visitation to the Sanctuary, as requested.

  • Provide transportation services for special events at the Sanctuary, such as the annual blessing, all staff week, Discovery Weekend and pre-or post-conference Sanctuary visits.

  • Complete daily Welcome Center operational duties and other assigned tasks as requested.

  • Contribute to the achievement of departmental goals.

  • Cross train and provide coverage in other Welcome Center departments, as needed.

  • Attend trainings and meetings as requested.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work with distractions in a busy work environment.

  • Proficient computer skills a must. Microsoft Office and Google Docs preferred.

  • Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record for past three (3) years.

  • Ability to drive a 14-passenger van safely through varied weather and road conditions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Repetitive bending, twisting and stepping into and out of passenger van.

  • Ability to work in close proximity of coworkers behind reception desk.

  • Ability to see clearly, read road signs and safely view changes in terrain.

  • Must be able to spend extended periods of time in close contact with all types of animals in all weather conditions.

  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.

Our program success is allowing us to be a role model for Network Partners and others, as we lead the way in revolutionizing volunteer engagement in animal welfare. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located 5 miles from the town of Kanab, UT and is a life-saving haven for nearly 1,600 adoptable animals. Annually, the Sanctuary is host to over 10,000 volunteers. The Sanctuary volunteer engagement team float is part of the team who ensures that all Sanctuary volunteers and groups have an exceptional experience and demonstrates understanding of the link between Best Friends culture and mission and the important role it plays in helping to inspire and influence volunteers to continue in our lifesaving work to Save Them All. This position will provide primary support to the group coordinator team and secondary support to the volunteer specialist team and the animal area volunteer coordinator team as needed. This is an exciting and unique role as it offers the opportunity to engage with the volunteers in a multitude of ways. Responsibilities: * Group Coordinator: * Help coordinate the daily logistics of visiting volunteer groups. * Follow a pre-established group schedule. * Ensure group participants' satisfaction and safety. * Must be able to work with and provide excellent customer service to groups from a variety of demographics such as: corporate groups, active adults, college students, residential treatment program participants and youth groups. * Share information with the group about Best Friends life-saving work and 2025 goal as well as what's happening in their community and how they can get involved to help Save Them All. * Engage in all types of service learning from projects to presentations. * Be knowledgeable and informed regarding current trends in and materials about animal welfare and advocacy. * Volunteer Specialist: * Serve as a contact for responding to volunteer inquiries and guiding volunteers through the account creation, trip planning and onsite engagement process. * Responsible for performing all duties associated with Sanctuary volunteer engagement activities including but not limited to answering phone calls, assistance with volunteer account creation and shift sign up, communicating our processes and policies, providing directions, and contacting and coordinating with other Best Friends departments on the volunteer's behalf. * Greet all volunteers in a warm and inviting manner, while engaging them in conversation and sharing information about the Sanctuary during their volunteer check in. * Volunteer Coordinator: * Greet and check in volunteers, demonstrate safety procedures, and assign volunteers to appropriate areas in Dogtown or Cat World. * Interact with volunteers during their work shifts to solicit ideas and feedback, and to facilitate the best possible experience. * Help ensure that volunteers have an exceptional experience while building relationships, promote future engagement with Best Friends at the Sanctuary, nationally and with Network Partners. * Work to balance the needs of animal area caregivers with the activities of the volunteers. * Work with all staff to deepen volunteer engagement. Skills and Experience: * Key attributes of this position include engaging, inspiring, knowledgeable, authentic, professional, proactive, positive and innovative. * Enjoys working with the public and comfortable with public speaking in a variety of work settings. * Adept at multi-tasking while maintaining attention to detail and able to make decisions using sound judgment. * Experience with problem-solving, conflict management and resolution as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations with tact and diplomacy. * Exhibit competency in animal handling and safety and a willingness to be trained to work with a variety of species. * Proficient computer and technology skills a must. Microsoft Office 365 preferred. Must be a quick learner when it comes to using new technology and equipmen * Prior experience with using a volunteer management system a plus. * Working knowledge of Facebook/social media helpful. * Meet and maintain the requirements of our vehicle insurance provider necessary for the operation of Best Friends vehicles. Experience driving a multi-passenger vehicle preferred or possess a willingness to learn. * Must have a valid driver's license with no citations in the last 3 years and must have access to transportation and able to transport group project supplies or tools (i.e.: rakes, gloves, buckets, etc.). Please note that a motor vehicle check will be completed. Physical Requirements: * Must be able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and have the physical ability to perform strenuous manual labor. * Must be able to work a flexible schedule (i.e., weekends, evenings, early mornings). * Must be able to work around allergens like hay, dust, and animal fur. * Must be able to effectively interact with and handle most Sanctuary animals.
