The Opportunity

The position is laboratory based with an emphasis on sample processing via centrifugation to separate and aliquot plasma or serum. Responsibilities also include sample storage, tracking, and maintenance of all freezers and laboratory equipment.

The Laboratory Technician will participate in all aspects of sample processing and data preparation in support of pre-clinical and clinical studies while working within a lab that complies with GLP/GCP regulations. This position will also interact with other groups within the facility such as Toxicology Operations, Safety Assessment as well as all Bioanalytical laboratories responsible for assay development, validation and sample analysis.

How you will contribute to make a difference

  • Performs centrifugation of blood samples and processing for various sample types as required (i.e. blood and urine).

  • Receive and unpack shipments of pre-clinical and clinical trial samples. Perform verification of sample identity with supporting documentation. Inform Project Management and analyst of discrepancies and any sample shipment issues. Ensure sample integrity and quality through all phases of processing and storage.

  • Register samples using a LIMS system. Generate labels and worklists for sample analysis

  • Organize aliquots and allocate samples for required analysis.

  • Prepare all assigned study documentation. Ensure all data is reviewed and deviations are written in a timely manner. Record all metrics for study related work. Ensure timely data submissions to meet reporting timelines

  • Inventory, prepare and package samples for shipment, transfer or disposal with all required documentation

  • Performs and maintains inventory of all general use laboratory supplies

  • Performs routine daily maintenance of all general use laboratory equipment

  • Participate in mandatory rotational coverage for late night, weekend and holiday hours

  • A minimum of 1 year relevant work experience

  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of centrifugation equipment

  • Experience with separating and aliquoting plasma/serum

  • Experience with sample storage, management and LIMS

  • Must be able to multitask and stand for long periods of time

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills and a high degree of attention to detail

  • Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Experience with Laboratory Information

  • Systems (LIMS) a plus

  • Experience with biological sample shipments

  • Able to work in a matrix team environment.

  • Flexible with schedule

  • Experience with GLP/GCP data recording a plus

Additional specific responsibilities as they pertain to their area of assignment may include, but are not limited to carrying out critical phases of various procedures such as the following: May be required to breed and develop animal colonies, collect tissue samples and collect data for routine operations; Work with others in scheduling and carrying out established standard biological assays and present the results as written notes or verbal reports; Perform such tests and assays using appropriate equipment and techniques in areas of biology, pharmacokenetics, simple chemistry, microbiology, and immunology; Prepare animals and samples for testing, observe tests, and detect and report responses; Perform support duties that involve animal health maintenance, i.e. sentinel program, water and feed evaluation, sanitation sampling and testing, and other related tests, as required; May be required to correlate and calculate related data, summarize and record test results and assays; Dissection and removal of internal organs and/or tissues, limited necropsies under managerial direction/supervision, preparation of specimens for archiving, and quality control checks; Processing tissue and excreta samples from laboratory animals; handling of radio-labeled test materials. Under supervision, may assist with the writing of new or revised procedures. Participate in employee training and ongoing training and education programs as required. The Assistant Biological Technician assigned to Veterinary Sciences will be required to perform animal husbandry and care below their level. The Assistant Biological Technician will perform responsibilities in compliance with all applicable SOPs, study protocols, GLP guidelines, and other Federal, State, and corporate policies and guidelines. The Assistant Biological Technician must have AALAS certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or a two year Associate Degree (AD) in an appropriate science or the equivalent education/experience as determined by the company. The Assistant Biological Technician must regularly participate in other training programs that enhance his or her work related knowledge. The Assistant Biological Technician with the Associate Degree (or equivalent) will be required to achieve their ALAT certification within 12 months, become certified at the LAT level within 18 months of completing their ALAT, and complete certification at the LATG level within 18 months of achieving their LAT certification. Those who do not meet the ALAT certification requirements within 12 months will be considered as not meeting the requirements for the position, and be required to bid on a position outside the department. Those who achieve ALAT certification, but not LAT, will be considered for reassignment to an open position as a Level 11 in Veterinary Sciences. Those who achieve LAT but not LATG will be considered for reassignment to an open position as a Level 12 in Veterinary Sciences.. The Assistant Biological Technician with an LATG certification will be required to complete their AAS (or equivalent) degree within 5 years. These individuals must also enroll in college courses within 6-months of being awarded the Hl4 position, and continue to take courses in pursuit of a degree. Those who do not meet these requirements may be assigned to an open Level 12 position. The Assistant Biological Technician with an LATG certification will be required to complete their AD (or equivalent) degree in order to be considered for the next highest level. In addition the Assistant Biological Technician will work under guidance and direction, but demonstrate conceptual understanding and ability to initiate tasks. They must follow operational procedures in the performance of daily tasks, and work cooperatively with other employees in efforts to achieve departmental goals. The employee will minimize losses by reporting all errors promptly to their supervisor. The employee will have direct contact mostly with his or her immediate supervisor, with other departmental employee's and will have direct contact with research personnel. The employee must be able to exert moderate physical effort in moving or lifting equipment and animals. Medical screening prior to initial placement is required to evaluate for history of allergy, asthma or physical problems which could endanger an employee in this work environment and to evaluate for the presence of diseases, e.g. Tuberculosis, which endanger laboratory animals and may require subsequent reassignment. The employee will have frequent exposure to biohazards and disagreeable conditions, including odors, heat, noise, excrement and will have potential exposure to toxic test compounds.
