We serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and travelling public daily through our mission to plan, deliver, operate and maintain a transportation system that is safe, moves people and goods, enhances the economy, and improves quality of life. We are the third largest state maintained highway system in the country, maintaining over 58,000 miles of roads, bridges, and tunnels, employing over 7700 people through a diverse workforce. At VDOT, we work collaboratively, communicate effectively, encourage nimble learning and value differences to do our best and achieve a high performance culture. We currently seek an Engineer to conduct traffic engineering studies, develop engineered solutions, and address roadway safety and operational problems that affect motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The selected candidate will serve as a task leader on teams which will include other engineers, technicians and field staff. Responsibilities include regular status updates, field data review, crash statistics evaluation, and development of realistic and cost effective solutions. Incumbent will provide reports with recommended solutions, sketches and cost options, and will assist District staff during the preliminary engineering phase of project development including plan reviews for various traffic control components including transportation management plans, sign and markings plans, guardrail, etc. The candidate will also evaluate land development applications for safety and access components and prepare responses to traffic engineering and operational issues which arise during construction. Additionally, this position will support the work zone safety program as needed. VDOT is an emergency response agency; therefore the incumbent may work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed. We are a ?Virginia Values Veterans?? Minimum Qualifications * Knowledge of civil and traffic engineering principles/practices and standards * Experience or demonstrated knowledge of MUTCD * Experience or demonstrated knowledge of traffic engineering safety studies * Experience or demonstrated knowledge in designing and/or reviewing plans for traffic control devices (signs, pavement markings, MOT, guardrail, etc.) * Knowledge of project development process, policies, guidelines, and regulations related to traffic control devices * Skill in the use of computers and software applications (MS Office) * Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple assignments within set timeframes * Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal/external customers * Valid driver's license required.
