Sales and Use Tax Accountant
Our client, a publicly traded company, is looking for a Sales and Use Tax Accountant for a 3+ month contract. As a Sales and Use Tax Accountant, your role will be primarily responsible for the preparation and filing of sales tax returns of the company. The role will periodically assist in resolving any sales tax issues that arise as a result of business operation.
Responsibilities of Sales and Use Tax Accountant
Assures timely and accurate filing of sales tax returns for the company.
Responsible for filing various miscellaneous tax returns and informational returns.
Maintain supporting accounts and records, including interaction with corporate accounting to ensure proper reporting of tax information.
Assist in researching sales tax issues regarding; audits, compliance, and new business initiatives.
Participate in tax planning and special studies to determine tax implications of company operations.

Requirements

Skills/Qualifications of Sales and Use Tax Accountant
Bachelor?s degree in Finance, Business or equivalent degree and/or experience
5+ years? experience as a Sales and Use Tax Accountant
Multistate sales and use tax and audit experience is a must
Must be strong in MS Excel
Experience in Vertex is a plus
Exceptional communication skills that provide the ability to interact with all levels of the organization with a high customer service orientation

Responsibilities This position, reporting directly to the Tax Supervisor, is responsible for all indirect taxes for the North American Organization. This includes the filing and payments of all personal property, business licenses, unclaimed property, sales and use tax returns. In addition this position oversees all audits associated with the returns that are filed. This position is responsible for running all the reports needed to file the tax returns, researching tax laws that relate to the products and services we provide to our customers, reviewing and preparing sales tax exemption certificates, and preparing all schedules and reports requested by internal and external auditors. Responsibilities also include working directly with auditors to provide information they need to complete their audits, reviewing proposed assessment calculations and ensuring audits are closed in a timely fashion. The person in this position will also make recommendations to correct any audit deficiencies to reduce future audit liabilities. * Manage all state and local personal property, sales and use tax audits for Canada and United States * Must be able to diligently research and analyze sales and use tax issues and assist other departments with tax issues * Prepare and send tax exemption certificates to vendors * Review and update the exemption certificate tables * Prepare all state and local business licenses * Minimize audit exposure by ensuring compliance by other service groups * Interact with the 3rd party vendor that prepares our personal property tax returns * Review and incorporate new tax rate changes * Run and analyze sales tax reports in Oracle and Vertex * Review and analyze accrual accounts on the general ledger Qualifications * This position requires strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical, and verbal/written communication skills. Accuracy and attention to details are critical. The candidate must be able to set priorities and have the ability to meet numerous different deadlines from multiple sources. Extensive use of computer applications, especially Excel and accounting systems (Oracle, Discoverer, OFA, Web reporting) is required. * The candidate for this position should have a general knowledge of Iron Mountain and what services the company provides, especially in the North American Organization. This would include services such as Records Management/Data Protection Storage and Shredding and the overall daily operations performed in the field. * This position will have no direct reports nor will they be responsible for leading others. Professionalism, tact and a proactive nature are required as well as the confidence to make tough decisions to carry out policies and procedures for the better of the department/company. * Problem Solving can range from routine accounting issues to complex ones that arise from various sources such as internal (field) and external customers (auditors).
