AmeriCorps Safe Housing and Neighborhoods Program Coordinator The Salem City Community Housing Initiative is a new program in the rural City of Salem, New Jersey. This groundbreaking program will be delivered by a team of AmeriCorps members who will work to create affordable housing opportunities for residents while holding landlords accountable for their properties.

The initiative will work to increase access to homeownership, decrease property maintenance neglect, and decrease crime created by vacant buildings through code and tenant rights enforcement, financial literacy, and community engagement. The AmeriCorps Safe Housing Program Coordinators will work with Salem City Code Enforcement Officers to increase community safety in Salem City. AmeriCorps members will work to locate owners of vacant properties, log reported hazard conditions on vacant properties, work with landlords and tenants to maintain safe properties and work with the City to improve neighborhood appearance.

Applicants should be self- starters with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively. Good verbal and written communication skills and an overall ability to be clear and concise. Computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) a plus.

This position may require field work in addition to a standard office work environment. Members should be able to lift 30 pounds, stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to travel within the City of Salem. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.

Member Duties : Member Duties include but are not limited to: Community Outreach Provide information to landlords and tenants making them aware of rental certification requirements.

Organize landlord and tenant events to provide information on code enforcement. Organize landlord/police events to provide training on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Code Enforcement Document resident complaints and submit to Salem City Code Enforcement Officers.

Maintain records on landlord violations. Work with Code Enforcement and the Tax Office to locate absentee landlords and vacant property owners. Report any additional violations seen e.g., abandoned cars, garbage, unsafe structures to Code Enforcement.

Outcome Tracking Provide weekly reports for AmeriCorps. Tracks and enters data on a timely basis and maintains organized records. This may include entry into electronic data tracking programs.
