Minimum Qualifications

  • Education and Experience:
  • Associates degree or Completion of a Technical or Vocational course in business or safety/occupational health and safety.

  • At least 3 years of experience related to implementing and facilitating training programs and/or safety-related training.

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • 4 plus years of experience related to implementing and facilitating training programs and/or safety-related training.

Special Requirements (Licenses and Certifications):

  • Certification to teach Defensive Driving Course (DDC), Work Zone Safety, Flagger Spotter, First Aid/AED/CPR, and OSHA 10.

Essential Capabilities and Work Environment:

  • Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities necessary for job performance.

  • Typical environmental conditions associated with the job.

  • Light physical demand, up to 10lbs sometimes

On-Call Rotation Schedule Flexibility Required in response to nights, afterhours and weekends.

The Senior Safety and Training Officer is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing training programs to enhance employee education and skill levels. This role also focuses on facilitating and implementing safety-related training, inspections, and programs to improve the safety and health of employees. This is an advanced professional position, capable of handling most assignments independently, and is considered a promotional opportunity within the department. The individual in this role may be the sole professional in this specialty within their work group.

Supervision Received:

Work methods and outcomes are typically reviewed by a more experienced professional or a supervisor before finalization.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Focuses on training programs and/or safety-related training.

  • Plans, organizes, and implements training programs to enhance employee education and skills.

  • Facilitates and implements safety-related training, inspections, and programs to improve employee safety and health.

  • Conducts needs assessments to determine the type of training required and develop appropriate training and development programs.

  • Provides instruction or identify external resources for teaching.

  • Performs safety inspections and accident investigations.

  • Conducts safety analyses and reporting and facilitates safety committee meetings.

  • Enforces workers' compensation procedures to ensure injured workers follow the process.

  • Be available to respond after hours, nights, and weekends as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Decision Making:

Select from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks. Final decisions are made by the Director.

Leadership Provided:

May oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safety-related issues and loss control methods.

  • Understanding of applicable policies, procedures, standards, and regulations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Strong organizational and planning skills.

  • Good math skills.

  • Ability to stay current with policy changes, methods, equipment needs, budget, and departmental operations.

  • Capability to assemble information and compile reports and documents.

  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations and procedures.

  • Proficiency in using A/V aids for presentations.

  • Effective communication skills with all levels of employees.
