Safety Specialist

This position is responsible for supporting the EHS program at Thorlabs providing support to all business units and serve as a subject matter expert regarding general safety, best practices, and local, state, and federal regulations. This role requires a highly motivated individual, attention to detail, ability to communicate and train employees to achieve desired results.

Essential Job Functionsinclude the following, but are not limited to:

• Recognizes, assesses, and controls safety and health hazards in the facility, and works with internal business units to minimize occupational health and safety risks and manage compliance with applicable regulations.
• Helps with implementation, monitoring, and managing safety programs, policies, and procedures.
• Conducts comprehensive safety audits.
• Conducts accident investigations and works with business units to correct safety hazards and develop preventative procedures.
• Performs job hazard assessments and recommends measures to control exposures, including substitution of less hazardous materials, personal protective equipment (PPE), work practice changes, and engineering controls.
• Prepares and conducts training classes.
• Writes reports documenting observations and recommendations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
• Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Requirements

Qualifications

Experience:

• This role requires 2 + years of experience in safety role or a similar role

Education:

• B.S. in safety or related field is a plus

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Effective verbal and written presentation skills with the ability to influence and educate.
• Able to communicate and disseminate information effectively.
• Ability to multitask, be detail oriented and define solutions and improvements.
• Able to shift focus quickly and handle urgent events.
• Ability to research data and comprehend safety regulations.
• Knowledge in the use of word, excel, PowerPoint.
• Able to travel to local Thorlabs Newton sites.

Other:

• The person in this position needs to frequently walk or stand to perform job duties.
• Must be able to detect and observe behaviors that need immediate corrections and must be done in a manner that creates trust and positive behavioral improvements.
• Occasionally lift (no more than 50lbs), bend or reach.
