Position Overview

The Safety Specialist is responsible for providing guidance and support with daily safety objectives including but not limited to OSHA compliance and safety performance. The position will be responsible for identifying training needs, facilitating training, as well as recommending and implementing policies and procedures to ensure awareness and compliance with all safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Administer/maintain company safety programs; ensure any/all new developments in human performance and technology available are utilized for incident/injury prevention.

  • Ensure compliance with company, state, and federal OSHA regulations and standards.

  • Facilitate in the creation of a positive safety culture with an emphasis on learning and engagement of employees to support safety goals

  • Facilitate safety training to employees on programs, policies, and at orientations.

  • Assist/Coach operations managers/supervisors in conducting their own training programs. Collect & make available safety & health materials to operations supervisors for training needs.

  • Audit lockout/tag out procedures, confined space, personal protection equipment, and industrial equipment operations as well as other required safety expectations.

  • Provide direction/technical support to ensure employees' health and minimize potential employee exposure as well as guide and answer routine questions related to company safety policies and procedures.

  • Ensure accurate reporting, recordkeeping, and documentation is generated to be used in reporting local activities to management and assist in the reporting for local, state, or federal agencies.

  • Perform ongoing site inspections and audits, monitor employee safe work practices, identify/mitigate hazards, and follow up on near miss incidents.

  • Accident investigation and corrective action completion.

  • Provide reports and analytics as needed through identified systems. Record and manage all local site safety documentation and provide reports to management.

  • Provide ideas, innovation, and suggestions for continuous improvement and opportunities.

  • Assist with worker compensation claims and return to work programs.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty.

  • Bilingual preferred, Spanish / English

  • Preferred OSHA 10/30-hour trainer certification

  • First Aid/CPR/Blood borne pathogens training and/or certification

  • Traffic Control/Flagger trainer certification

  • Proficient computers skills with MS Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point)

  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive material in a highly professional manner

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree of occupational safety/health preferred or equivalent combinations of training and related experience

  • At least 5 years of construction and/or industrial safety experience

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check

  • Must have valid driver's license

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook

  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary

  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement essential corrective measures

  • Solid training/teaching experience

  • High ethical standards

  • Ability to read and comprehend complex written and verbal instructions, correspondence, and memos

  • Ability to write complex correspondence

  • Ability to carefully articulate and clearly communicate specific technical information and creatively compose development strategies

  • Ability to participate in and speak effectively to large and small groups

  • Can utilize resources (people, funding, material, support, etc.) to accomplish tasks and goals

  • Must be able to orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously to accomplish a goal

  • Able to utilize a computer for word processing, e-mail communication, and preparation of documents and presentations

  • May require periodically lifting objects up to 30 lbs
