ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)
Obtain and maintain POST certification with full arrest authority
Attend and pass the School Resource Officer Certification class
Wear a Class "A" uniform while on campus during regular school day, unless otherwise authorized by Superintendent
Report to campus by 7:00 a.m. and remain until 4:00 p.m. daily, with 60 minute lunch on campus. Variance of this schedule may be required for special events as requested by administration
Attend extra-curricular activities, including, but not limited to: athletic events, dances, pep rallies, and graduation exercises. (Any exception must be approved in advance by school administration)
Notification by 7:00 a.m. of absence due to illness
Employment by other law enforcement agencies outside the scheduled contract hours and summer, when school is not in session, is permissible
Develop plans and strategies to prevent and/ or minimize dangerous situations which may result in student unrest
Develop plans to deal with and react to situations of student violence, hostage situations, bomb threats, and such events threatening the safety of students, staff, and visitors to campus
Provide community-wide crime prevention presentations
Meet with PTC and other school groups on campus to discuss requested topics, specifically conflict resolution and substance control areas
Act as a resource for students and staff in law education and individual advisement as needed
Create an environment supportive of interpersonal relationships between students and officers of the law
Perform duties as a visible, active law enforcement figure on each campus addressing legal matters originating on assigned campus
School Resource Officers assigned and trained as School Safety Coordinator(s) will comply with school safety provisions set forth by Missouri State Statute
CHAIN OF COMMAND: In district-wide, extra-curricular, and on "call" events on district property, the SRO reports to the Superintendent (Assistant Superintendent in absence of Superintendent). At the individual building level, or at events not supervised by a Superintendent, the building principal (or his/her representative) receives reports from the SRO.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Graduate or equivalent; POST Certification as a Police Officer with full arrest authority as well as maintenance of current School Resource Officer Certification in State of Missouri required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine and complex reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of patrons, employees, and students.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: POST Certification and SRO Certification in State of Missouri
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Must have strong communication, computer and interpersonal skills, have ability to learn and utilize new software programs as systems are upgraded. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand and reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must be able to transport from building to building or to local enforcement agencies.
