Duties
The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) is a consolidated health care system that includes VA Medical Centers in Montgomery and Tuskegee Alabama as well as Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Dothan Alabama, Ft. Rucker Alabama, Monroeville, Alabama, Columbus Georgia and Montgomery VA Clinic. The incumbent will be required to work on site at the other locations as required. Some of the duties of the position include:
Reviews and analyzes standard operating procedures.
Evaluate to determine unfavorable trends.
Initiates the required corrective measures.
Service on Accident Investigation Boards.
Ensure facilities are in compliance with mandatory safety regulations.
Ensures that mandatory training is provided and completed as needed by all employees.
Provide services by advising and directing leadership and all other staff, in the development and implementation of safety at CAVHCS and CBOCs.
Performs technical and administrative duties that involves managing and administering programs related to the operation of emergency management.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Statement
This is a supervisory/managerial position. Applicants selected for supervisory or managerial positions that have not previously completed a supervisory or managerial probationary period must complete a 1-year supervisory or managerial probationary period. Basic Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following basic requirements:
Possess a degree with a major study in the safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene),or degree in another related field that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours of study from among the following(or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. (NOTE: If qualifying based on education, transcripts MUST be submitted with your application)OR.
Possess experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Qualified experience should include: Managing safety or occupational health program elements, Developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management, Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. Developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards. Developing or implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses. Analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards. Designing or modifying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: There is regular and recurrent walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, and lifting and carrying of moderately heavy objects (up to 30Ibs) during inspections, training, and investigation. The incumbent is occasionally required to work shifts other than normal administrative working hours to effectively accomplish the requirements of extending the safe patient handling program to all personnel and phases of the Medical Center.
