Carpenter Co. has an immediate opening for a Safety Manager at our Reinhart Technical Center in Richmond, VA. This position is responsible for management of programs that include, but are not limited to, technical center safety meetings, inspections and safety policy updates in order to reduce risk in a large industrial R&D laboratory setting.

As the Safety Manager, you will be expected to work collaboratively with R&D Management, Supervisors, Scientists/Technicians, contractors and HS&E professionals to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. Consults on the safe implementation of new chemicals and processes, as well as, monitors hazards in both laboratory and pilot-scale chemical operations.
Your additional responsibilities as Environmental Health & Safety Manager will include:
Consults on the safe implementation of new chemicals and processes
Monitors hazards in both laboratory and pilot-scale chemical operations
Ensure adherence to safety guidelines, employee handbook, company policies and procedures, and other standards
Manages OSHA record keeping logs and maintains required documentation
Manages Hazard Communication Program including New Chemical Review and Approvals
Conduct and maintain Job Hazard Analysis and PPE Hazard Assessments and proactively respond to potential hazards
Lead R&D Laboratory Safety Committee which performs administration of safety audits, inspection procedures and records
Develops and maintains written procedures for the Safety Manual and work instructions
Enforcement of laboratory safety rules and a role in administration of disciplinary procedures for safety violations with appropriate management personnel, as necessary
Lead Incident Investigation teams and issue written reports on near-misses and accidents
Develop and modify, as necessary, short and long-term plans for the continuous improvement of the facility safety program
Monitor the facility programs, records, written procedures and training initiatives to ensure that the facility is in compliance with all federal, state and local laws regarding safety
Coordinates and Administers the Respiratory Protection Program including the management of Training, Selection, and Performance of Fit-Testing
Train and promote Safe Electric Work Practices and Energy Control Procedures
Maintain machine safety documents for required RTC equipment
Develop, implement and monitor training and orientation programs as necessary to maintain compliance with Corporate and governmental requirements
Develop safety training presentations and provides related training in routine Safety Meetings
Performs new employee safety training
Manage the WC Program including reporting, claims administration with adjuster and documentation to ensure compliance with State WC Statutes.
Perform other duties as required to ensure sustainable compliance and continuous improvement in safety and health
Coordinate with Plant Safety Manager for site-related issues
Skills / Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or other related field
A minimum of three (3) years of safety management
Ability to interact well with all levels of the organization and maintain strong relationships with team members, peers and internal customers
Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written
Direct experience with employee safety compliance, OSHA standards, safety management systems, industrial hygiene, electrical safety, chemical management and ergonomics
Functional knowledge of Federal and State Safety/Health Laws and Regulations (e.g., OSHA)
Functional knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Teams
