Under the direction of the Regional Safety Coordinator and Division Safety Manager, the Safety Internr performs inspections, audits, recordkeeping, and assists the Divisional Safety Manager in the administration of the company's safety and health management policies and programs.

KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES

The ability to work independently, coordinate a variety of tasks and activities, communicate with others, prepare reports, speak and write effectively, assimilate and understand information, Working knowledge of safety/health regulations and laws administered by OSHA, MSHA, USDOT, US EPA, and state/local agencies is valuable.

The Safety Intern's duties require familiarity with safety prevention and countermeasure plans and emergency planning. Safety responsibilities require familiarity with federal and state regulations covering hazardous chemical communication programs (GHS HAZCOM), confined space entry, personal protective equipment, lockout tagout, electrical safety, fire prevention, machine guarding, materials handling and storage, excavation, ladders and stairways, welding and cutting, and work zone safety.

  • Assist in development and planning of monthly Safety meetings.

  • Learn our Goal Zero program, daily huddles, one-on-ones, close calls, peer guide program etc.

  • Help Develop topics and coordinate a curriculum for weekly Toolbox Talks.

  • Assist in Performing root cause incident investigations.

  • Assist in Performing periodic compliance inspections at operating locations and jobsites. (Site Audits)

  • Assist Supt's and Mgrs. with recordkeeping responsibilities under various permits and regulations..

  • Learn Sub-Contract Trucker Insurance requirements.

  • Assist in Continuous Process Improvement Projects for the region.

  • Assist Environmental Coordinator with any issues and or questions.

  • Assist Manufacturing Supts with writing machine specific LOTO procedures.

  • Participate in Colas safety initiatives and implement them in the region.

  • With the Regional Safety Coordinator Accompany inspector's onsite (OSHA/MSHA) when possible.

  • Help Maintain Intelex Risk Management Database and scan documents for storage purposes.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and skills described herein. Working towards of a Bachelor's degree in the administration of safety functions corresponding to this position.

REASONING ABILITIES:

Must be able to understand and communicate safety and health regulations. Display an aptitude for problem solving where compliance violations are found. Be able to assist with instruction and training to company employees including but not limited to Chemical Hazard Communications, lockout tagout, PPE, firefighting, and Silica prevention. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Must possess a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with the company's Motor Vehicle Policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office work, site work, and some limited travel may be necessary. Outdoor work at mining, manufacturing and construction locations may require wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on conditions. This person will also be responsible for completing various fixed duties that support the site's HSES policies, along with performing various routine audits that support the site's HSES compliance programs. LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:NA ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * PPE stocking & inventory management – work with the vendor & Supply Chain Representative * Employee uniform management – work with Vendor's representative to address employee uniform needs/issues * Monthly Fire extinguisher inspections * Weekly Eyewash/shower station inspections/cleaning * Safety signage – install/replace as needed * Confined space entry supervision * Annual respirator fit testing * Hot work permit issuing * Sprinkler Impairment/Testing Red Tag issuing * Participation in Knowlton's Safety Committee * Chemical spill kit maintenance * Identification of chemical container labeling issues and supporting correction, as needed * Chemical storage audits * Daily inspections of tank farm and resin kitchen with a focus on flammable materials safety * Routine inspections on the shop floor that include spot checks/audits of site HSES programs (i.e. PPE, fork truck operation, lock-out/tag-out, confined space, machine guarding, laceration prevention, material handling, etc.) * Observations of shop floor employees and providing recommendations of improvement, through interactions with them * Monitor employee behavior for clear understanding of policies/procedures * Support completion of PJHA's * JHA review and coaching employees on specific work area tasks * Hazard ID program support * Support daily Toolbox Talks * Support compliance with Life-Critical safety procedures * Perform PJHA reviews (trending, looking for reoccurring issues) * Perform Hazard ID reviews (trending, looking for reoccurring issues) * Participate in incident reviews/investigations * Driving compliance with the life safety critical procedures QUALITY: Supports, maintains and continually improves Knowlton Technologies, LLC Quality Management System in accordance with requirements of the IATF 16949 International Standard.
