Ashland, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a Safety Engineer to join our Ashland Specialty Ingredients business at our Hopewell, VA location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Environmental, Health and Safety function. This position will report to EHS Manager.
The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsible for the Lead on the site's Occupational Safety Programs which includes:
The site's Ergonomic Program
The site's Industrial Hygiene Program
The site's Behavioral Safety Program
The site's Emergency Response Program
Able to assist in the site's Process Safety Management Program and its Life Critical Safety Programs (Hot Work/ Confined Space/ Lock Out Tag Out, Fall Protection, and Linebreaking)
Participate / Lead Ergonomic assessments, analysis and implementation
Investigate /report industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures
Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes including OSHA / ANSI / NFPA
Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance
Conduct or coordinate worker training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment
Participate in plans and specifications for construction of new machinery or equipment to determine if all safety requirements have been met
Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents
Confer with medical professionals to assess health risks and to develop ways to manage health issues and concerns
Serve as participating member of the Plant EHS Group & the site's Safety Steering Teams in supporting Plant Safety Process including Employee Involvement and Behavioral Based Safety Programs
In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:
Bachelor of Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or Safety related degree, required
Minimum 10 years' experience working in a process environment
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States
The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:
Trained in Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, OSHA, NFPA and ANSI Standards to ensure full compliance with these requirements
Understanding of PSM as to be able to participate in HAZOPs, PHAs, JSAs, RCAs along with Good Manufacturing Practices, ISO Systems
Experience in Chemical Manufacturing processes, Food, Pharma preferred
Experience in Behavioral Based Safety/Employee Involvement Safety Programs
Excellent verbal and written communications including, experience in writing and implementation of new policies
Must have experience devising and implementing Safety related programs and related policies
Must have a thorough understanding of OSHA regulations and standards
Must be able to present and communicate at several levels within the business
Proven data analysis and problem-solving skills
Proven self-starter with urgency for delivering results
