Department Summary

Research Policy and Compliance (RPC) within the Office of Research and Creative Activities (ORCA) supports UCLA's $1 billion annual research program by providing leadership, professional guidance and administrative services to faculty, department administrators, and students.

Position Summary

The Safety Committee Coordinator (SCC) within Research Policy and Compliance (RPC) is a vital part of UCLA's campus-wide safety and compliance program. The SCC is responsible for supporting the committees that conduct regulatory reviews of the use of radiation safety in academic, research, and medical settings through the Radiation Safety Committees (RSC) and the Chemical & Physical Safety Committee (CPSC). Reporting to the RSC Manager, the primary duties include, but are not limited to: 1) RSC protocol submission intake, preliminary review of complex protocols, ongoing analysis, monitoring, and approval; 2) training study staff and PIs on use of the RSC enterprise system and relevant compliance policies, procedures, and documents essential for protocol completion; 3) developing and recommending enhancements to the overall program; 4) interpreting and analyzing operating policy and procedure to meet the requirements of external regulatory bodies and University policies; and 5) preparing detailed meeting agendas, independently draft comprehensive minutes fully capturing committee members technical discussions, decisions, and action items.

The SCC works as part of a two-person team responsible for supporting committee business and for ensuring and documenting the University's compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and guidelines. The SCC is expected to function independently, with limited supervision, and to follow established RPC procedures. The individual reports to the RSC Manager. Exceptions to existing policy or non-routine issues are raised to the Director, RSAW as appropriate for guidance.

Qualifications

Familiarity and understanding of the academic environment in a large research institution of higher education with a medical center. (Preferred) Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to independently initiate and compose technical, comprehensive, and concise correspondence to investigators. (Required)Skill to interpret and analyze a variety of complex research compliance operating policies, procedures, and regulations to apply the appropriate source materials and assign subject matter experts accordingly to each case. (Required)Thorough knowledge and experience with qualitative and quantitative research design, including scientific research and medical concepts and related terminology. Interpret and communicate content to technical and lay person(s) regarding radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines. (Required)Advanced organizational skills, evidenced by the ability to prioritize competing demands, streamline processes, and optimize workflow efficiencies. (Required)Demonstrated self-discipline and sound, independent judgement to complete complex tasks and reach reasonable decisions that support program goals. (Required)Demonstrated capability to independently identify and resolve complex problems and conflicting issues, employing strategic problem-solving skills to mitigate risks and ensure alignment with departmental and institutional goals. (Required)Demonstrated skill in interpersonal communication, fostering collaborative relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders across diverse organizational levels to achieve programmatic goals and ensure institutional compliance. (Required)Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality in dealing with sensitive information. (Required)Experienced in the use of enterprise level research compliance committee management systems; including the ability to guide or train others using such systems for submission and review of research compliance protocols. (Required)Demonstrated proficiency with the most current version of applications in the Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced skills in Word and Excel. (Required)Experience working in a research laboratory setting, demonstrating practical knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, and safety protocols, enhancing the ability to provide specialized guidance and support to researchers in navigating regulatory compliance requirements. (Preferred)Demonstrated working knowledge and ability to apply relevant federal and state regulations as well as University policy in an academic, medical, and research compliance environment regarding the use of radiation and chemicals in research. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree Accredited college or university with major course work in a related field. (Required) Or Equivalent years of directly relevant work experience at a progressive level.
