Job Description Summary:

Provide campus security and safety for faculty, students, staff, volunteers, visitors, and patients. Implement crime prevention measures and maintain presence among campus community to preserve order and protect property. Detect signs of intrusion, investigate and report abnormal conditions and irregularities. Perform safety checks and inspections as assigned. Coordinate and facilitate emergency actions during disasters and times of crises.

This position will work the 11AM-7:30PM shift. Must have valid and current driver's license. Must be available for after-hours on-call duty and after-hours scheduled and unscheduled events.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.

  • Experience: One year of security or relevant experience.

  • Skills/abilities:

  • Valid and current driver's license.

  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts on occasion.

  • Must be available for after-hours on-call duty and after-hours scheduled and unscheduled events.

  • Ability to routinely patrol all areas of campus, including outside perimeter and parking areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety Certificate. Current CPR/AED Certification

  • Experience using Microsoft Office.

  • Effective communication skills.

  • Effective customer service skills.

Job Duties Outlined:

Security

  • 60%
  • Remain alert to the presence of unauthorized persons and emergency situations and contact law enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, and/ or Fire Department (911) as needed.

  • Perform routine security services to include indoor and outdoor patrol of campus by foot and vehicle, answering phone calls, and investigating alarms and disturbances.

  • Always maintain positive attitude and professional image.

  • Issue tickets for violations of campus parking and permit regulations.

  • Remain fair and impartial when enforcing regulations, policies, and procedures.

Monitor and authorize entrance and exit of patients, visitors, faculty, students, and staff through public access scheduling and access card management.

  • Maintain, monitor, and operate security equipment to include CCTV system, 2-way radios, fire and security alarm systems, and access control panels.

  • Collect and secure lost and found property.

  • Unlock and lock buildings, doors, offices, labs, as scheduled and upon request.

  • Write reports of daily activity and incidents, such as unauthorized persons, criminal activity, safety violations, and unusual occurrences.

  • Inform and warn violators of security policies such as loitering and trespassing.

  • Serve as Clery Act Campus Security Authority: assist with crime data collection and reporting requirements.

Safety

  • Perform and document facility safety checks (rounds), correct safety hazards when possible, and enter facility work orders when applicable.

  • Perform Life Safety checks as assigned on equipment such as facility lighting, alarms, fire doors, fire extinguishers, etc.

  • Provide basic first aid/CPR assistance during medical emergencies until EMS arrives.

  • Educate staff and students on safety policies such as smoking on campus, use of space heaters, etc.

Emergency Management

  • 10%
  • Monitor local weather radar, websites, and news sources for emergency notifications.

  • Activate emergency alarms and make overhead announcements for fire, severe weather, and other emergency situations.

  • Assist with building evacuation, shelter-in-place, facility lockdown and other emergency response procedures.

  • Maintain crowd and traffic control during emergency situations.

  • Execute the Incident Command Structure during emergencies; communicate and coordinate actions with Emergency and Safety Manager, Facilities Management and EMS.

  • Public assistance services: escort service, jump starts, tire air-pressure assistance.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
