Job Description

The Roll Grinder is responsible for safely preparing applicator and squeegee rolls for use on the paint line. The Roll Grinder follows standardized work instructions to ensure that prepared applicator rolls are consistent and able to produce a coated surface that meets customer requirements. The Roll Grinder ensures that an adequate supply of prepared applicator rolls is available for the paint line to sustain production and minimize productivity losses.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for safely preparing defect-free, applicator and squeegee rolls for use on the paint line, according to published work instructions.

  • Responsible for maintaining an inventory of applicator and squeegee rolls. Advises the Maintenance Manager or designee when rolls need to be sent to an external contractor for resurfacing.

  • Responsible for the maintaining all of the roll preparation equipment.

  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment and reporting any unsafe condition(s).

  • Responsible for maintaining an inventory of supplies necessary for preparing rolls. Advises the Production Manager when supplies require replenishment.

  • Responsible for verification of surface roughness and hardness of all incoming (new and resurfaced) applicator and squeegee rolls.

  • Responsible for detecting defective or failing roll bearings and removing them from service.

  • Responsible for rewinding/reworking coils at the rewind station.

  • Assist with roll changes in the coater rooms.

  • Receive and ship paint chemicals as needed.

  • Responsible for understanding and complying with the fundamental principles associated with the Quality and Environmental Management System in place at BlueScope.

  • Communicates daily with internal personnel from Production and Quality Control in order to assist in resolving problems and achieving company goals.

  • If (in the event of an abnormal occurrence) an employee feels uncomfortable, unsure or unable to safely correct an issue, that employee must contact a member of plant leadership for assistance prior to attempting to correct the issue.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Environmental Impacts of this Position

The Roll Grinder Operator creates large amounts of roll grindings from coater rolls. The Roll Grinder Operator has the responsibility to try and reduce the amount of grinding as much as possible. It is also the responsibility of the Grinder Operator to maintain all equipment in a manner to help prevent leaks and practice good housekeeping measures is a must.

Qualifications

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or (GED) and a minimum of two (2) years of industrial production or maintenance experience or equivalent job experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend documents including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and simple correspondence. Also: the ability to communicate information, in small group situations, and to other employees.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions and percentages.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to, apply common sense understanding to perform work instructions that are furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Also, the ability to, solve problems which involve multiple variables in a standard situation.

Other Skills & Abilities:

Incumbent should be capable of using power tools and required to drive a forklift.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; bend; stoop; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance. The employee will be required to be capable of lifting a minimum weight of 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close-up and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally performs near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold or heat. The noise level in the work environment is considered moderate.
