Description of Work
This position will be responsible for providing assistance to stranded motorists. Assistance may include, but is not limited to, changing flats, jump-starting batteries, clearing disabled vehicles from travel lanes, removing minor non-hazardous spills and debris from traffic lanes. Provide first hand information to law enforcement agencies on fatalities, damage, and spills from traffic lanes.
The Road Ranger Program is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and State Farm Insurance.

Duties and Responsibilities
Provides minor mechanical assistance to stranded motorists.
Performs assistance such as changing flats, jump starting batteries, clearing disabled vehicles from travel lanes, removing minor non-hazardous spills and debris from travel lanes, etc.
Interacts with general public providing assistance and information.
Interacts with law enforcement agencies on fatalities, damage, spills, etc.
Documents activities per department requirements.
Abides by FDOT contract responsibilities.
Operates state law enforcement radio system.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques on all types of vehicles.
Skills in operating basic shop equipment and tools.
Skills in interpersonal communication.
Ability to efficiently perform work on vehicles in all weather conditions with all types of problems, in a fast-paced working environment.
Ability to project a positive LYNX attitude.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to work with Law Enforcement Agencies, Inventory Control Clerks and First Responders to traffic incidents.
Ability to bend, stoop, walk, stretch, kneel, and lift 50 lbs.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Ability to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Ability to pass a DOT physical and drug screen.
Ability to work in and around busy roadways and in varying weather conditions.
Ability to work with commercial cleaners and toxic materials.
Ability to provide own tools.
Ability to obtain a Florida CDL permit, Class B with airbrakes and a passenger endorsement prior to hire. Must be able to pass road test and pre-trip inspection to acquire CDL license, Class B with airbrakes and passenger endorsement by the end of probationary period.
Ability to pass an in depth FDLE background check.
Ability to meet all eligibility security clearance requirements per FDOT.*
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff, the public, coworkers and those doing business with LYNX.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED plus two (2) years experience in vehicle maintenance plus one (1) year of technical school. An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and ability to effectively perform the functions of this position may be considered.
Applicant has never been convicted of a felony offense.
Applicant is not currently on probation for any offense.
Applicant does not have any pending felony or misdemeanor charges.
Applicant has not been convicted of a misdemeanor offense involving any type of theft, violence or drug offenses within the past three (3) years.
Applicant has never been convicted of a crime involving domestic violence.
Applicant does not have a restraining order involving domestic violence or threats.
Applicant has never been arrested for any charge involving resisting arrest, battery or assault on a law enforcement officer.
Applicant is not wanted for any criminal offense.
Applicant is not illegally residing in the United States.
Applicant must be approved to work in the United States.
NOTE: Applicant may be denied security clearance at the discretion of the FDOT Security Manager.
Pay rate during training: $17.47 per hour
Pay rate after training: $18.47 per hour
