Road Maintenance Worker II

Description

Under supervision, to perform heavy physical labor and a variety of semi-skilled and manual tasks in the maintenance of roads and expressways, associated landscaped areas and related structures; and to operate a variety of trucks and light equipment.

Typical Tasks

• Operates two axle dump trucks, oilers and spray rigs, water trucks up to 1500 gallon capacity, small rollers, fork lifts, mowers, cement mixers, compressors, jack hammers, brush hogs, chain saws, tampers and augers;

• Assists in operating a variety of mechanical spreaders;

• Assists in constructing, erecting and repairing guard rails, bridges, retaining walls, drainage inlets, fences and road signs;

• Performs simple painting, carpentry and plumbing work;

• Rakes and shovels asphalt;

• Digs ditches;

• Cleans and maintains culverts and roadways;

• Prunes and trims trees, shrubs and ground cover;

• Waters and irrigates landscaped areas;

• Repairs and assists in installing irrigation systems;

• Reports location of garden pests and plant diseases;

• May operate small loaders;

• May be assigned to guide extra-help employees involved in picking up trash and weeding landscaped areas;

• Sprays herbicides;

• May maintain warehouse inventory through the Department's database and checks out tools, materials and equipment;

• Performs routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment;

• Makes and maintains time and materials reports;

• May be assigned to cooperative crews, within the Road Maintenance Division, during emergency conditions within the County;

• May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;

• Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training and experience, which demonstrates possession and application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Experience Note:

The knowledge and abilities required to perform this function are attained through possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience in road maintenance work including operating trucks and construction equipment.

OR

One (1) year of experience as a Road Maintenance Worker I with the County of Santa Clara.

Special Requirements:

Upon appointment, possession of a Class B (or higher) Commercial Drivers license with no restrictions, a Tanker Endorsement and any other licenses or endorsements required to operate the equipment assigned to the position.

The ability to qualify for and maintain a County Drivers Permit.

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, safety practices and tools used in road construction and maintenance;

• Operation and preventive maintenance of trucks and road construction equipment.

Ability to:

• Understand oral and written instructions;

• Perform a variety of manual tasks which requires an ability to, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, twist, push/pull, lift, drag and carry materials and objects;

• Demonstrate strength, agility and endurance;

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;

• Use a variety of hand and/or power tools;
