Summary

The Sterile Processing Service (SPS) RN QI Coordinator reports to, communicates and collaborates with SPS Chief for Quality Improvement and Safety surveillance of SPS, GI, clinics and OR processes at Mather, Martinez and Redding, wherever Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) is reprocessed or used.Provides quality oversight, produces reports, tracks non-conforming products and services using the VHA Directives and Memorandums, adheres to VA NCHCS policies, AORN, AAMI and IAHCSMM Standards.
Responsibilities

This RN ensures that all areas of the Medical Center that use RME are in compliance with VHA and local guidelines for safe use of RME. This includes ensuring that standard operating procedures (SOPs) and associated staff competencies for the reprocessing of Semi Critical and Critical RME used anywhere in the Medical Center are up to date and in concurrence with NCHCS and VISN21 SOPs and competencies. The RN collaborates with the Chief, Assistant Chief SPS, Supervisors and SPS RN Educator to ensure the development, validation, and tracking of initial and annual competencies for all staff performing reprocessing of RME. The RN may serve as a Co-Chair of the RME Committee and, in collaboration with the Committee, develops and monitors a calendar for routine RME inspections of all areas where reprocessing occurs to ensure ongoing oversight.
1.The SPS QI RN analyzes key steps in SPS and GI processes to identify potential for significant quality process improvement. This individual is responsible for Quality Improvement which may include developing educational training that covers all areas of SPS in accordance with VA Level One and VA Level Two training.
2.Assesses and educates end users on correct pre-cleaning, aseptic and sterilization processes and techniques, operation of sterilizers, principles of packaging sterile material, storage, correct sterilization and decontamination methods, safety, body mechanics, material handling and quality assurance monitoring techniques.
3.Applies a collaborative team approach in identifying, analyzing, and resolving SPS quality concerns, doing inspections and tracers throughout the VANCHCS sites where RME is utilized.
4.Retains current knowledge of multidisciplinary SPS resources, programs, and services.
5.Actively participates in reviewing and updating policies, procedures, and standards to promote evidence-based, patient focused care.
6.Maintains professional knowledge and skills based on current evidence-based practice. Maintains expertise in quality processes as related to SPS, GI and RME.
7.Maintains effective working relationships with professionals and support personnel within the medical center and the community.
8.Applies critical thinking and analytical skills to identify barriers for safe patient care delivery and utilizes processes improvement strategies to correct or improve current state.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years of acute care clinical nursing practice with demonstrated skills in quality improvement, communication and mentoring.

    Member of an appropriate professional nursing organization and seeks continuing education and professional development opportunities consistent with the annual learning plan. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
    Nurse I Level I

  • An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    Nurse I Level II

  • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
    Nurse I Level III

  • An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
    Nurse II

  • A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:

Use and function of all normal motor and sensory anatomy for provision of patient care, reading, writing, listening, observing/seeing, heavy lifting, bending, pulling, pushing, stooping, squatting, walking, standing, use of fine motor muscles; visual and auditory acuity; emotional intelligence to respond to stressful and/or emergent situations and crises appropriately and calmly; self-care skills to maintain physical, psychological, and emotional health. Examples include: heavy lifting of 45 pounds and over, heavy carrying of 45 pounds and over, straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1-4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other.
