Registered Nurses to join our Emergency Department Nurse Residency Program!

The Emergency Nursing Residency Program ("ED 101") is a comprehensive blended (classroom and clinical) educational program developed by the Emergency Nurses Association's expert emergency nurse authors, based on the latest, evidence-based Guidelines for Emergency Nursing Practice. This program combines a standardized evidence-based online curriculum and textbook readings with hands-on skills labs and a clinical practicum led by experienced emergency nurses.

Program Purpose:

To provide registered nurses who have no previous experience in emergency nursing with the basic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to function independently in an entry- level emergency department nursing position.

Overview and timeline:

This blended program combines a standardized, evidence-based online curriculum and textbook readings with hands-on skills labs and a clinical practicum, which consists of eight (8) weeks of didactic training followed by anywhere from twelve (12) to twenty (20) weeks of clinical experience depending on baseline experience.

In order to successfully complete the program, candidates must receive a passing grade on module exams.Upon successful completion of program modules, candidates will move forward to clinical specialty training.

Candidate requirements:

  • Candidates must be clinically sound, self-driven, compassionate and motivated with a passion for the emergency nursing

  • Satisfactorily completed the probation period in his/her current job (internal candidates).

  • Those with less than 12 months of employment will be encouraged to apply and will be considered in compliance with the criteria of the Collective Bargaining Agreement

  • External candidates and new graduate RN's will be considered

  • An essay describing your interest in emergency nursing at Norwalk Hospital

  • Must have a current CT RN License.

  • Must have a BSN.

  • Must have current BLS.

Criteria for program completion:

  • Successful completion of the ENA modules as assigned daily.

Summary: To provide pulmonary rehabilitation, smoking cessation and respiratory home care collaboration. Acts as a resource for other disciplines as needed. Responsibilities: Competency 1 - ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION Criteria A: Completes initial evaluation of patients referred to the pulmonary rehabilitation program, select outpatient respiratory care modalities, asthma education, tracheostomy care or smoking cessation counseling Criteria B: Uses appropriate procedures and evaluation tools according to pulmonary rehabilitation procedures, validated protocols and other professional guidelines Criteria C: Formulates goals for rehabilitation; includes the patient's goal as part of the goal statement. Criteria D: Documents clear, concise reports in the electronic health record 2. Competency 2 - PLANNING, INTERVENTION AND EVALUATION Criteria A: Plans treatment for each patient based on the initial and ongoing assessment of the patient · Formulates plans for specific modalities for rehabilitation patients Criteria B: Implements appropriate treatment plan according to policies and procedures, specific to the patient's needs, ( e.g., pulmonary rehabilitation procedures, expert panel asthma education guidelines, tracheostomy care procedures) Criteria C: Documents progress for each treatment session, assesses response to therapy/education and plans next treatment Criteria D: Includes patient in the treatment plan when possible by assigning self-care measures that are mutually agreed upon. Involves other disciplines in the treatment plan and documents interaction in the patient's record. 3. Competency 3 - : PATIENT EDUCATION Criteria A: Documents results of teaching on designated forms..Criteria B: Teaches patients and their families at an age appropriate level. Criteria C: Uses appropriate and current published patient information material to supplement teaching. 4.FOLLOW-UP PROGRAM Criteria A: Participates in ongoing communication with patients with chronic lung disease. . Assists with the periodic patient satisfaction surveys 5. COMPETENCY: TRAINING AND EDUCATION Criteria A: Updates knowledge and skills through attendance at in-hospital and outside educational programs Criteria B- Precepts respiratory therapy students in aspects of pulmonary rehabilitation. 6. Other duties and procedures as requested by the section. Criteria A: May include but not limited to spirometry, nebulizer therapy, arterial blood draws, and emergency procedures such as cardiac arrest. Criteria B: Treats inpatients and outpatients in the pulmonary rehabilitation program according to rehabilitation procedures Other duties and procedures as requested by the section.
