The RN Senior Director Patient Care Services is responsible for the delivery of patient care that promotes safety and well-being of all patients in multiple assigned departments on a twenty-four-hour basis. Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the overall clinical nursing practice and administrative activities including fiscal, material and human resources management. Monitors care delivery to ensure appropriate patient outcomes. Participates in the development and implementation of patient care services policies and procedures and maintains open communication with all staff and physicians to promote improvement in performance. Assists senior management in the development, implementation, assessment, modification, and ongoing management of the department(s), which promote the efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care services within the organization.

GENERAL DUTIES

Service:

  • Promotes excellence in customer service by acting as a liaison and effectively interacts with physicians, staff, patients, and families.

  • Establishes and achieves unit goals, utilizing a participative approach. Assures implementation and evaluation of these goals.

  • Identifies potential problems and generates innovative and creative solutions.

  • Provides education, assistance and support to other hospital departments/units/services relating to Services.

  • Provides professional consultation and program leadership techniques, methods and procedures of program area and administrative functions.

  • Integrates department's services with the hospital primary function, and facilitates collaborative and positive working relations between staff, physicians, and other areas of the hospital.

Quality:

  • Assesses plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of patient care and institutes proactive changes.

  • Contributes to quality patient care through membership and active participation on department, medical and hospital committees.

  • Complies with all Hospital and Departmental policies, procedures and programs.

  • Monitors policies and procedures for compliance and quality standards.

  • Contributes to quality patient care through membership and active participation on department, medical and hospital committees.

  • Supports and leads from a process improvement perspective, utilizing benchmarking data to continually achieve higher levels of excellence and cost effectiveness.

  • Works collaboratively with members of the Services departments in developing policies, processes, and procedures which enhance overall quality, efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction.

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable quality standards as well as federal, state, and local licensure requirements, codes and regulations.

  • Accountable for translating departments' goals and objectives, the hospital and nursing strategic goals.

  • Participates in the system wide Journey for Excellence.

  • Participates in Nursing Services quality initiatives (e.g. huddles, clinical rounding, NDNQI, quality task forces).

  • Participates and adheres to all Joint Commission, DHH, CMS recommendations and survey results.

People:

  • Leads the staff in the development and implementation of standards of practice/care for designated unit(s).

  • Develops and maintains a system for operation of the unit through communication with staff, other managers, supervisors, coordinators, and other personnel in the Services as well as Administration.

  • Demonstrates effective leadership, is an active communicator and manages people effectively. Responsible for conducting performance evaluations in a timely manner.

  • Develops and empowers management teams to lead daily operations, resolve issues, manage employee performance, manage physician relations, ensure high quality patient care service excellence, and ensure operational efficiencies.

  • Schedules and assigns staff, considering experience and skill level to meet patient needs.

  • Oversees professional continuing education needs and life-long learning of the staff, ensuring staff is 100% compliant with mandatory and regulatory education.

  • Promotes nurses to obtain a higher professional degree and specialty certification to achieve the NDNQ and Journey for Excellence benchmarks.

  • Supervises and directs the work of the Services directors, managers, supervisors, etc.

  • Interviews, hires, evaluates, and disciplines all staff as required.

Finance:

  • Assists with implementing the hospital strategic plan to accurately forecast revenue, expenses and the capital budget in all departments.

  • Actively participates in the development and implementation of the Nursing Strategic Plan and the Nursing Recruitment and Retention Plan.

  • Participates in the preparation of annual operational, capital and personnel budgets.

  • Monitors, evaluates and controls appropriate utilization of budgeted FTE's and operational expenses. Actively participates in the Labor Management Program.

  • Facilitates the design and establishment of appropriate management control procedures for areas of responsibility. Prepares and maintains records, schedules, recurring and special reports, and analyses. Facilitates goal attainment for unit.

Growth:

  • Develops and implements a given growth plan through reengineering and redesign of business processes and systems, including staffing and accurate billing to increase revenues and reduce costs.

  • Develops and directs strategy, growth, and operational objectives for the service line. Integrates inpatient and outpatient services and strategic plan with the mission, vision and values of LCMC/Nursing.

  • Assists with the identification, implementation of new programs for Services.

  • Personal development plan to attend conferences, educational seminars that can improve knowledge of best practices of Medical/Surgical Services.

  • Responsible for participating in the Patient Services Executive Council, the nursing strategic plan that supports Services, the system, hospital, and Nursing's mission, philosophy, and core values.

  • Functions as a role model demonstrating competency in clinical judgement and nursing process, selected technical skills and appropriate knowledge base.

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years of experience nursing management.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSN and Master's Degree.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider

  • Registered Nursing License

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing with a diverse population of employees, physicians, patients and their families.

  • Ability to work productively under stressful circumstances.

  • Ability to perform tasks which may involve lifting, prolonged standing and walking.

  • Ability to promote customer service and mediate conflict in support of Touro's mission, vision and values.

  • Knowledge and Proficient in use of at least one Staffing and Scheduling system.

  • Training and development in supervision and business operations.
