Responsibilities

PROGRAM LENGTH:

The Periop 101 program is a structured comprehensive ten-month program for registered nurses.

SCOPE OF PROGRAM:

Periop 101 is an all-inclusive educational program developed by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN). This program is designed to provide registered nurses who have no previous experience with the basic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to function independently in an entry-level perioperative nursing position. At the completion of the course, it is expected that the nurse will be able to practice independently at the novice level in a perioperative position.

ORIENTATION:

  • The two-part program uses a blended learning model incorporating online didactic content, skills-based labs, and a clinical preceptorship. Part one is a six-week curriculum that focuses on online modules in a classroom learning environment.

This didactic portion is the foundation and fundamentals of operating room nursing that combines standardized, evidence-based, online curriculum with hands-on skills labs, observation experiences and simulation training. Successful completion of the Periop 101 exam is required to continue to full clinical rotations at week seven.

  • Part two includes full immersion into clinical rotations. The clinical experience will consist of training in all service lines during the remaining months.

Periop 101 nurses will be paired with service-line preceptors (General, Gynecology, Robotics, Urology, Orthopedics, ENT, Plastics, Burns, Vascular and Neurology) at various Bridgeport Hospital sites including Surgease, during the program to complete clinical practice. Nurses will become proficient in scrubbing and circulating (primary duty).

The residency program will take place Monday through Friday 0700 - 1530. Hours may vary as needed to complete training, including evening, night and weekend rotations towards the end of the program. After successful completion of the program, you will be moved into a 40 hour position.

With your application, please include a cover letter and a statement discussing the following:

  • The reason(s) why you are interested in pursuing a career in the Operating Room.

  • What you know about Operating Room nurses and why you would be a good fit for this position.
