Summary Description
Under the direction of Medical Directors and Patient Care Services Transport Manager, provides comprehensive, safe, and effective medical care to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients transported by the CHM Critical Care Transport Team, PANDA One, via ground and air ambulance. Applies special techniques, precautions, and procedures in providing basic care and responding to life-threatening situations. Conducts a comprehensive initial and ongoing assessment of patient's health status to determine patient's physical and emotional status, initiating appropriate intervention as needed. Utilizing the nursing process, clinical judgment, and technical skills, performs routine as well as complex therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as directed by policies, treatment guidelines and medical control directive.
Performs Procedures Unique to the Transport Function including:
Oral Endotracheal Intubation
Maintain Oral / Nasal Endotracheal Tubes
LMA Insertion and Maintenance
Emergent Cricothyrotomy
Maintenance of Tracheostomy Tubes
Effective Ambubag Mask ventilation
Initiation and maintenance of mechanical ventilation - conventional and high frequency
Evaluation and administration of oxygen, nitric oxide and heliox
Conduct effective resuscitation as outlined by BLS, NRP, PALS, ACLS, and ABLS protocol
Establish venous access
Interpret laboratory reports and radiographic studies
Needle decompression of Pneumothorax
Septic work-up
Defibrillation, cardioversion, and external pacing
Ventilator management - conventional and high frequency
Provide whole body cooling of neonatal HIE patients
Coordinates, guides, and monitors the work of non-nursing members of the transport team. Documents all information relative to patient care during transport; maintains all records and logs relative to patient transport. Communicates with patients, physicians, staff and referral hospital regarding the patient's condition and progress. Maintains all nursing transport equipment and supplies according to procedures; assists in the evaluation of equipment and supplies for transport. Reports all problems relative to transport to the Manager of Patient Care Services
Minimum Qualifications
1.Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing or currently enrolled in BSN program.
2.Michigan license to practice as a registered nurse.
3.Three years of pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care or level 1 pediatric trauma experience.
4.Must be currently working in pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care or level 1 pediatric trauma.
5.Holds current passport or enhanced driver's license or is eligible to apply for one.
6.Required Certifications:
7.Teaching Experience preferred.
Skills Required
1.Effective verbal and written communication skills for communication with staff, patient and families.
2.Requires clinical judgment and analytical skills to provide comprehensive care and the subsequent formulation and documentation of care plans.
3.Requires physical ability and visual/manual dexterity to move/transport patients and supplies, insert needles/catheters, prepare medications and provide emergency CPR maneuvers.
4.Interpersonal skills necessary to work productively with referral hospital, patients, families, physicians, and a variety of personnel.
5.Computer literacy.
6.Ability to sit, stand or walk for long periods.
7.Ability to bend, crouch and kneel.
8.Ability to use hands for keyboarding.
9.Ability to lift up to 80 pounds and move up to 250 pounds.
