Job Summary:
Utilizing the standards set forth for nursing practice by the ANA and ONS, the RN will organize, modify, evaluate, document and maintain the plan of care for oncology and medical/surgical patients. It will include individualized, family centered, holistic, supportive, and safe care.

Qualifications

Education

BSN required within 24 months of hire into RN role

License/Certification

Current RN license in the State of Texas or compact license

Current BLS issued by American Heart Association required

ONS Chemotherapy biotherapy certificate course required within 1 year

Experience

Minimum of one-year experience in acute care hospital within the last three years, required. Oncology experienced highly preferred.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with established protocols and multidisciplinary plan of care utilizing independent, dependent, and interdependent interventions to restore stability, prevent complications, and achieve and maintain optimal patient responses for all patients through patient centered/patient valued care. MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS: Education: * Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Skills or Special Abilities: * Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care and clinical area specific standards. * Establishes access and maintains central line devices and peripheral intravenous access. * Demonstrates an understanding and practical approach to patient safety for care delivery for cancer patients. * Administers chemotherapy, blood products, IV medications, and biological agents in a safe manner. * Validates accurate chemotherapy doses. * Demonstrates knowledge of specific conditions, including disease and treatment therapies for the cancer population. * Exercises independent judgment in providing nursing care. * Must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and possess good oral and written communication skills. * Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in accordance with established policies and procedures. * May be required to communicate effectively, via the overhead paging system. * Must be able to provide continuous assessments consult with other team members as required. * Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors. * As applicable, will be required to demonstrate acceptable knowledge of nursing standards of care for specialty care area. * Must satisfactorily complete the oncology orientation to all applicable competencies. * Ability to reference the methodology of the does calculation or standard practice equations. * Ability to assess, evaluate and initiate extravasation management per hospital policy aligned to current literature and guidelines.
