GENERAL SUMMARY The Circulating RN Works collaboratively with Surgical Team to ensure patient safety and positive patient outcomes. Monitor Surgical cases for continued sterility, and support surgical team from outside the sterile field. Thorough and complete intra-operative documentation, as well as case set up and preparation. This specialty works while adhering to AORN standards and practices. Light call schedule (after training is complete) for emergent cases only and no trauma call at a small critical access hospital with two OR#s and one endoscopy suite. Flexible Schedule, with no holidays or weekends. FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES General Clinical Practice Utilizes the nursing process in caring for all patients, to include: assessing symptoms, planning interventions, implementing treatment plans, evaluating responses to interventions, and revising plan based on overall effectiveness. Demonstrates the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the population served. Adheres to the established practice standards and procedures at New London Hospital, in the administration of all medications and in-patient care activities. Makes knowledgeable decision in consideration of the facts and the disease/surgical condition. Evaluates the patient#s response to the nursing and/or medical regimen and reassesses and revises plan of care, as necessary. Documents care provided using hospital standards. Provides education to patients and families based on assessment of learning needs. Participates in interdisciplinary discharge planning. Creates and monitors patient environment to ensure it is safe and free from hazards. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Assists in minor procedures, as requested. Specialty Clinical Practice OR Circulating Demonstrates competence in the principle and practice of surgical asepsis, surgical hand scrub, appropriate gowning and gloving, nursing responsibilities for conscious sedation, and sterilization, disinfection, preparation, packaging and storing of surgical instruments and supplies. Demonstrates competence the use of special equipment, electrocautery, insufflation, tourniquet, cameras, warming units, venodyne, and microscope. Carries out care according to AORN/ASPAN Recommended Standards of Practice. Follows the Standards of Practice established for the Surgical Services Department. Phase I # Phase II Recovery Demonstrates competence in Phase I and Phase II care of all post anesthesia needs of patients. Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner. Assesses and reassesses pain, utilizing appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family on pain management. Provides patients with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently. Demonstrates knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration, based on age and clinical condition of the patient. Provides care in the ambulatory setting directed toward meeting both the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient. Performs head-to-toe preoperative assessment on all patients and reassesses as needed postoperatively. Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring and can identify dysrhythmias. Service Line Facilitation Develop and maintain inventory systems for implants and non-stock items to ensure product availability. Expedite deliveries and shipments for surgical department inventory, as necessary. Maintain purchase order files and related records of current suppliers, materials, prices and deliveries. Coordinate with vendors to find appropriate substitute items if stock levels become critical and confirm suitability with the director. Collaborate with materials management, surgical staff, central supply and the Director to coordinate requisitioning, ordering and distribution of inventoried materials, non-stock supplies and equipment. Coordinate with vendors to ensure delivery dates and logistic requirements are met. Coordinate and facilitate service line specific education for staff including, but not limited to, equipment, procedures, pre-op care, and post-op care. POSITION REQUIREMENTS# Knowledge / Skills / Abilities # 2 years of relevant clinical practice Experience # Minimum 1 yr. med/surg. or critical care nursing experience. Previous OR experience a plus. Will train according to AORN guidelines in conjunction with AORN Peri-Op 101 Program modules and a precepting RN. Certificate of completion from AORN Peri-Op 101 program. # Education # Graduate from Accredited nursing program with Associate Degree, BSN preferred. NH State License Current BCLS and ACLS Certification.
