POSITION: Nurse Manager

SCHEDULE: Part-Time, 16 weekly hours

FACILITY: Draper Correctional Facility

LOCATION: Elmore, AL

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs supervisory and professional nursing functions with individuals with a mental illness and/or a developmental disability and in consultation with other Community Mental Health staff members. Serves in a leadership role within the multidisciplinary treatment team.

Inter-Relationships

  • Inter-relates and works effectively with management, staff, patients, all clinical staff, custody and administrative staff on all levels and at all locations.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for management and supervision of nursing staff.

  • Prepares nursing assignments as assigned.

  • Participates in CQI initiatives and monitors compliance.

  • Monitors and supervises medications.

  • Provides nursing treatments as outlined in the plan of care.

  • Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of the inmate.

  • Assesses, develops, and monitors programs for self-administration of medications.

  • Works with departmental staff to coordinate medical appointments as necessary.

  • Assists in planning, developing, and carrying out staff and patient education programs as assigned

  • Provides medication reviews and Tardive Dyskinesia screens as indicated in the Plan of Service.

  • Provides consultation services to institutional staff for mental health issues as requested.

  • Follows and enforces security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications.

  • Adheres to and enforces safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills.

  • Attends mandatory and optional in-service training.

  • Participates in and conducts in-service programs; assists in orientation of new staff.

  • Maintains open lines of communication via attendance at staff meeting when possible.

  • Attends mandatory in-services on annual basis.

  • Provides direct assistance to the Health Services Administrator in administration, planning, management and delivery of behavioral health services at the facility level.

  • Contributes to behavioral health program development and evaluation.

  • Adheres to safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills.

  • Provides documentation in accordance with unit policies and procedures.

  • Monitors and insures the appropriate utilization of psychotropic medications.

Must be able to ambulate throughout the facility for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to clearly communicate orally and via written and typed correspondence and notes using various forms, records, charts, and electronic media.

This position may require rotating assignments operating on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week schedule where employee is subject to both voluntary and mandatory overtime. Employee may be exposed to a challenging environment, which may include exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens and loud noises.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Licensing:

Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Alabama.

Certification:

CPR

Experience:

Two years supervisory experience.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
