Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a full time Nursing Professional Development Specialist to join our Emergency Room Team.

  • 12 years. We are open from 6:30 a.m.

  • 7:30 p.m., Monday

  • Friday.

POSITION & DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

  • Full time, 40 hours per week

  • Day Shift

  • 37 bed unit to include a dedicated 5-bed Behavioral Health Safe Suite located within the department.

  • More than 53K visits per year (approximately 150 patients/day)

As a Nursing Professional Development Specialist, you will assume operational responsibility for:

  • Serving as the clinical resource and the expert clinician to staff.

  • Educating and developing staff from novice/beginner to expert and competent as a practitioner.

  • Analyzing delivery of care against evidence-based practice standards and seeking ways to implement and improve outcomes.

  • Leading, facilitating, and participating in interprofessional quality initiatives and educational plans.

Minimum Requirements

License and Certification

  • Virginia or Compact Multi-State RN License in good standing

  • ACLS

  • At time of hire must have CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse), CNL (Clinical Nurse Leader), or NPD Specialist (Nursing Professional Development) certification.

  • Nursing Professional Development certification must be obtained within 3 years of hire and maintained thereafter.

Education

  • Master's Level Degree

Experience

  • 3 years clinical nursing experience

Job Summary

The Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialist promotes professional development application of nursing clinical expertise in specified patient populations. Serves as an expert clinician, consistently serving as a clinical resource to staff. Recognized as a mentor; works to develop staff from beginner to expert status. Critically analyzes care delivered in identified service area against evidence based practice standards and seeks ways to improve outcomes. Accountable for defined aspects of staff development, continuing education and professional development of nursing staff. Leads, facilitates, and/or participates in interprofessional quality initiatives, implementing evidence based nursing practices, shared decision making, and other educational plans and activities.

Master's Level Degree in Nursing or other applicable field required.

Doctoral Degree Preferred.

Must be certified at time of hire in specialty area of department assigned or CNL or NPD Specialist Certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support required for Intermediate Care and Critical care units. Nursing Professional Development certification must be obtained within 3 years of hire and must be maintained thereafter.
