Job Title:

RN II-ECMO Specialist

Job Summary:

Provides expert patient care and acts as a clinical resource to other ECMO specialists. Will initiate, monitor and maintain the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system according to protocol. Troubleshoots and intervenes. Communicate accurate and timely reports of system activities. Monitors progress of patient's status and adjust ECMO system accordingly. Documents and reports all pertinent information to ECMO coordinator and ECMO physician. Assists ECMO, respiratory and nursing staff in the development, implementation and evaluation of care and treatment for patients on ECMO. Maintains quality standards in patient care established by UMMC and ECMO guidelines. Consults with ECMO coordinator and medical staff regarding patient care. Functions as a lead ECMO specialist to the unit and staff members.

Education & Experience

Must be licensed as RN for one (1) year. Two (2) years of RN experience in specified area preferred. BSN preferred.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required: valid RN license, PALS preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

ECMO training will require advanced critical thinking skills also, teaching ability. Leadership ability, interpersonal skills, verbal communications skills, collaborative skills, the ability to handle flexible scheduling including on-call shifts. Must complete annual safety training. Must have decision making skills. Competency for this job may include animal lab models and competency will be ensured initially and on an ongoing basis.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates safe and orderly operation of extra-corporeal circuit according to ECMO protocol; including but not limited to: initiation of the extracorporeal life support system; drawing blood samples; administering medication, fluids and blood products, monitoring and intervening for circuit complications. Maintaining anti coagulation therapy; analyzing activated coagulation time (act's), blood gas, chemistry panel, HGB/HCT, adjusting the gas and pump flow; monitoring and maintaining dynamic pressures and blood flow of the circuit.

  • Assures complete documentation of extracorporeal therapies.

  • Reports pertinent information on patient's status to ECMO team.

  • Participates in ECMO related performance improvement and research activities.

  • Forms effective relationships with co-workers, customers and suppliers.

  • Maintains competency in the function as an ECMO specialist, maintains ongoing theory and skill level with changes in practice.

  • Provides effective instructions to patients and family members. Communicates in an effective and positive manner with patient/family and other members of the health care team. Manages rapid accurate decisions regarding severe diseases, chronic illness, death, and dying with the ability to cope in these stressful situations.

  • Serves on nursing, hospital, or medical center committee, task force or project team to improve patient care, or work area. Demonstrates core standards of exceptional customer service and functions as a lead for the team.

  • Ensures equipment and supplies are functional and readily available for ECMO initiation.

  • Performs as a clinical resource to designated areas of the hospital.

Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional travelling to offsite locations, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, occasional standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
