Job Summary:

With an extremely unique, exciting and fast-paced nursing environment, our J52 Thoracic Surgery Step-down Unit is dedicated to delivering excellence in patient care. Our approach to patient care is one that is team-oriented and multidisciplinary, including nurse practitioners, case managers, and other specialized team members from areas like respiratory, dietary and more. With three assistant nurse managers on-hand, our management team ensures 24-hour unit coverage and clinical resource availability.

As a 24-bed nursing unit, we specialize in esophagectomies, thoracotomies, hiatal hernia repairs, bilateral lung volume reduction and congenital chest abnormality repairs. Our team commonly conducts procedures such as thoracentesis, paracentesis and Claggett's Window dressing change. We also use common chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, Jejunostomy tubes with tube feeding, Jackson Pratt drains and PCAs (patient controlled analgesics).

In addition to Thoracic Surgery patient care, J52 also treats patients for heart failure, chest pain and cardiac arrhythmias, and often prepares patients for open-heart surgery.

Participates in a residency core curriculum based on their individual learning needs. Provides direct nursing care, alongside a coach, in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization. Transitions to RN Resident II upon successful completion of the core curriculum.

Responsibilities:

  • Establishes and/or revises priorities for patient care activities based on the following: acuity of need, patient preference, and resource availability.

  • Initiates and/or maintains interventions to assure continuity of safe/effective care for patients.

  • Responds to data indicating risk to individual's health and initiates action to correct, reduce, or prevent the risk.

  • Seeks supervision, consultation, assistance when unable to perform safely and independently.

  • Complies with established hospital/department personnel policies.

  • Uses communication strategies in order to achieve desirable outcomes.

  • Documents in patient's medical record according to established guidelines.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • BSN preferred

Certifications:

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA)

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • New grad or less than one year RN work experience or if experience RN moving from non-inpatient to acute direct care clinical inpatient setting with less than one year current acute direct patient care RN experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.

  • Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.

Our nursing caregiver staff is comprised of highly trained specialists in advanced neurological assessment techniques. The Neurological Step-down Unit is certified as part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center within Cleveland Clinic's nationally ranked Neurological Institute. Located on Cleveland Clinic's Main Campus, the patient population of H62/H63, includes young adult through geriatric patients with diagnoses of conditions such as: ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subdural hematomas, status epilepticus/seizures, brain tumors, neuromuscular disorders and spinal injuries. Our nursing caregivers commonly perform complex neurological procedures that include intracranial pressure monitoring, seizure monitoring, lumbar punctures and central/arterial line placement. A highly diverse unit, our nurses are an integral part of promoting early patient mobility, which is facilitated with modern equipment such as ceiling lifts and other devices to ensure caregiver and patient safety. The unit touts an individualized orientation process that enhances the learning experience by allowing new nurses to observe and take part in a wide-range of procedures. New nursing caregivers are also supported with one-on-one preceptors, as well as weekly progress meetings. Provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.
