This position is required to take call - approximately 30 hours a month

The Forensic Registered Nurse (RN) provide prompt, sensitive services to victims of sexual assault, non-accidental trauma and other medical exams requiring forensic intervention; ensures the accurate collection of forensic evidence Performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the ROLE

Coordinates care of assault victims with personnel from the Emergency Department, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Family Practice and other specialty clinics.

Conducts assault forensic examinations per the IAFN, OAG, DoJ, and BSWH guidelines in addition to American Medical Association and American Nursing Association guidelines.

Provides information and advice for medical personnel relating to assault health care, fact and expert witness as a Health Care Provider,

Applies knowledge and skills of biomedical/medico-legal investigation in the immediate nursing interventions and follow-up care of victims of violence.

Provides guidance on assault examination procedures as an expert practitioner in forensic evidence collection

  • JOB SUMMARY*

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who uses the BSWH nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery by the health care team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response.

The RN promotes safe passage for their patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to health care personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition and the competencies of the employee.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE*

Clinical Judgment: Using clinical reasoning, conducts accurate clinical assessments according to practice standards.

Identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs. Develops, implements and evaluates the nursing plan of care. Modifies plan to meet clinical outcomes.

Knowledge and understanding of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.

The ED is divided into two areas; one area with 30 beds (25 exam rooms and 5 critical care rooms) and one area with eight beds capable of handling behavioral health (BH) patients and Fast Track (FT) patients. Also included is a 7 chair Turbo Track area to accommodate level 4-5 patients. The ED is a Trauma Level IV designated trauma center, Chest Pain Center with primary PCI and resuscitation, and Primary Stroke Center. The ED Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct patient centered care in a critical care area as part of a multidisciplinary team to prioritize care through appropriate triage, assess the needs of the patient and provide treatment, and properly disposition the patient. The ED RN provides patient-centered care to a population within the age range of newborn to geriatric. The ED RN works full time, part time or PRN. Variable shifts to meet the needs of the department which operates 24 hour a day, seven days a week. Weekend work is required. The ED RN performs a wide variety of job duties during their shifts; promotes and restores patients' health by collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members, completing the nursing process and the patients' plans of care, providing emotional, physical and spiritual support to the patients and their families and supervising assigned team members.
