GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse is responsible for the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care using the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice within a specific unit or clinical area.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Nursing Process: Utilizes the nursing process for the delivery and management of patient's care.

  • Maintains assignment of patients and caseload according to unit guidelines and established standards of practice.

  • Uses positive customer service skills when communicating with patient and patient's family.

  • Utilizes the nursing process for the delivery and management of the patient's care.

  • Utilizes clinical reasoning and critical thinking.

  • Involves patient, family/significant others and other disciplines in decision making related to the patient's plan of care.

  • Serves as a patient and family advocate.

  • Implements interventions consistent with hospital standards of practice and prescribed medical plan of care and evidence based practice.

  • Documents the patient assessment, plan of care, and response to intervention. Meets all unit documentation standards.

  • Communicates and coordinates the patient's plan of care to ensure continuity of care.

  • Maintains competency in management of clinical emergencies.

  • Provides complete communications in SBAR format (Situation, background, assessment, recommendations) to relieving staff members and demonstrates advanced planning for the patient.

  • Navigates through the critical elements of the patient medical record software and HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital Intranet.

Clinical Practice: Demonstrates/applies the skill and judgment necessary to implement the medical/nursing plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures necessary for the care of the patient.

  • Bases clinical practice on evidence, unit guidelines, and professional standards to improve the quality of care and to guide clinical judgments.

  • Demonstrates essential knowledge of pharmacology/medications in administering drugs and monitoring the patient's response.

  • Maintains competency with technology and equipment. Utilizes equipment in a safe manner.

  • Uses appropriate infection control and safety practices in all duties.

  • Acts as a charge nurse as requested by the nursing management team.

Collaboration:

  • Delegates responsibilities to others according to Massachusetts general laws and practice guidelines with an understanding of their roles, knowledge and capabilities.

  • Facilitates cooperative and collaborative relationships among the various disciplines and departments to ensure effective quality patient care.

  • Works weekends, holidays and off-shifts as required by unit staffing needs.

Climate: Influences others by establishing a climate for optimal patient care, mutually supportive collegial relationships and professional development.

  • Holds self accountable for professional practice.

  • Presents self in a calm and professional manner and effectively verbalizes relevant problems during daily interactions, and/or staff meetings.

  • Interacts and copes effectively with diverse populations in stressful situations resulting from trauma and illness.

  • Participates in performance improvement activities utilizing principles to support and improve patient care.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of unit goals and is active in committees and projects to achieve these goals.

  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings. Accepts responsibility for reading staff meeting minutes when not able to attend.

  • Keeps current with literature regarding changing practices, interventions and best practices in patient care.

  • Assumes responsibility for seeking out educational and professional opportunities for personal learning needs and growth.

  • Assumes responsibility for meeting mandatory education requirements and unit specific education and competencies.

  • Acts as a preceptor as requested.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging process, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

  • Ability to provide care for a designated group of patients according to the unit guidelines and hospital policies, procedures and protocols.

  • Ability to lead, guide and motivate staff.

  • Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.

EDUCATION:

Must be a graduate of a recognized school of Nursing

A Bachelor's degree (BSN) in Nursing is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

2-3 years of Nursing experience preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

LICENSES, ETC.:

Must have a current Massachusetts Registered Nurse License.

Certification in a nursing specialty desired.

GENERAL SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Follows established procedures to perform all lab tests (including all levels of complexity as defined by CLIA) to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. * Employee will be cross-trained and competent to perform in multiple areas / disciplines of the lab. Employee seeks out areas that need assistance when the volume of testing in their assigned area is minimal or tasks are completed. * Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process. * Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner. * Operates all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results. * Performs basic troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas. * Performs calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner. * Adheres to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data. * Informs the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results. * Recognizes critical and /or life threatening results and notifies the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy. * Assists with the resolution of procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notifies the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems. Appropriately documents all actions taken. * Maintains all records and documentation needed to comply with JCAHO, CAP, AABB, Medicare, Medicaid, and HealthAlliance laboratory regulations. * Assist in the orientation and instruction of new employees and students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures. * May assist supervisor in preparation for Department and Laboratory wide inspections. * Completes all competencies, proficiency testing, required education / reading and annual paperwork in a timely manner. Participates in appropriate role in disaster, fire drills, fires and other emergency situations. * Participates in annual HIPAA training requirements and maintains confidentiality of all personal health information (PHI). * Communicates in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family and visitors in accordance with the CARES Hospital Service Excellence Standards. * Obtain and process specimens from patients as required using established techniques. * May assist the lab supervisor in the institution of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques. * Maintains work areas in a clean, safe and organized manner. * Assist with maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties. JOB REQUIREMENTS JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Requires professional knowledge of medical technology principals and methodologies sufficient to perform clinical laboratory procedures. Requires the ability to endure periods of heavy workload and stress. Requires the ability to accept constructive feedback and initiate appropriate actions to correct situations. Must possess ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed.Requires the ability to use computer based systems to record, tract, review, and interpret test results. EDUCATION: An associate degree from a regionally accredited college / university in clinical laboratory science and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technician program or equivalent is required. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience is preferred by not mandatory. May hire as Medical Technologist, depending upon experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC. : Certification from a nationally recognized accreditation agency: NCA, ASCP or equivalent is required. A recent graduate of an accredited Medical Technician program or equivalent who is certification eligible must take the accreditation exam within the first year of employment.
