Summary: Provides general nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned patients and maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation.
Initiates a patient education plan according to the individualized needs of the patient, as prescribed by physician and/or hospital policy including patient and family instruction. Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding, and allay apprehension.
Functions as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.
Administers prescribed medications and treatments, including IV fluids, in accordance with approved nursing techniques.
Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment and examination of patient.
Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.
Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of patient. Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
Monitors hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interprets the results.
Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treat appropriately.
Accurately assigns triage categories.
Ensures supplies are adequately stocked and equipment is functioning properly.
Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises the LPN and the Emergency Tech in the Emergency Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience: Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Minimum 6 months experience in a med/surg unit or other equivalent setting preferred. EMS experience a plus.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret medical periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, patient's family, physicians and co-workers.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills: Basic PC skills preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Current CPR certification (including Neonatal Resuscitation)
Current RN license in Ohio
Current ACLS and PALS certification (must obtained within 12 months of hire)
TNCC certification preferred
