Position Title: RN, Charge Department: Emergency Care


Purpose:


Provides shift-to-shift leadership for the practice and delivery of safe, effective, ethical, and culturally-competent patient care for all age groups requiring stabilization, and/or resuscitation.

This includes support for management of human, fiscal, material, and environmental resources in accordance with hospital guidelines, organizational/nursing philosophies, and in compliance with regulatory and professional standards, including ANA Standards of Professional Performance. Key accountabilities include fostering interdisciplinary collaborative relationships; making appropriate patient care assignments; ensuring smooth shift operations; facilitating a seamless transition for the next shift that includes exchange of essential information; active participation in quality monitoring and performance improvement activities; promoting evidence-based practice through research utilization or conduct of practice research.

Supervisory Responsibility:


Advanced Direction:

The job requires some accountability for scheduling, assigning, or coordinating work.

The employee will check the quality of work, provide guidance, instruction, training, and direction to others. The job requires some formal or official supervisory responsibility.

The individual serves as a group leader and acts in an assistant supervisory or lead role. In addition, the employee is expected to provide information or suggestions on human resources matters.


Materials Responsibility:


Limited: Work requires limited responsibility for material resources.

Examples of resources could include supplies, equipment, inventories, small budgets, and other similar material assets. The employee has a limited amount of control over these resources. The cost of errors is also limited in terms of damage, waste or financial loss.

Problems associated with material resources are not complex. The volume of resources may vary, but the level of difficulty in dealing with these resources is uncomplicated.

Promotion to Administrative III or IV Charge Nurse is required within 2 years of assuming full time charge nurse position. ACLS, PALS, Basic Life Support, ECRN # Training Preferred:

Baccalaureate degree in nursing or clinical certification; ENPC; TNS; NRP # Licensure/Registration: Registered Nurse in Illinois, Registered Nurse in Iowa within 1 year.


Experience:


More than 1 year experience required.


Interpersonal Skills:


Interaction is with a variety of people inside or outside the organization.

Communications are often difficult or stressful in nature.

Contact with others involves complex, detailed and often sensitive topics. The job requires a high degree of interpersonal skills to deal with a range of complicated problem situations. Interactions involve gaining the agreement of others.


Working Conditions:


There is routine exposure to highly adverse environmental conditions including physical hazards, health and safety risks, and otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.

Personal risks require safety equipment or precautions to be followed closely. The time the employee may be exposed to these conditions is limited to 70% or less of the work day.
