5 North Medical/Oncology is a 46 bed unit and serves a very diverse patient population both in medical needs and culturally. Our unit works as a team and has patient ratios of 5-5:1 related to activities and staffing. We drive outcomes by engaging staff to practice and participate on one of our outcome based teams. Best Practice and excellent clinical outcomes are the goals of the team based approach, and this allows staff to be actively involved in practice decisions and patient outcomes.

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional, comprehensive nursing care for patients in an acute care environment. Accountable for the delivery of coordinated, safe, compassionate, therapeutic, evidence-based quality care to patients and families, based on individual physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and appropriate care strategies throughout the lifespan. Practices in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act in the state of employment, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the ANA scope and standards of practice. Key functions and specific skills for the job are found in the unit specific onboarding checklist and in standards that are applicable to the specialty.

In this position you will:

  • Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate patient's care to achieve patient goals and to optimize outcomes.

  • Effectively advocate for ethical and holistic care to promote the autonomy, dignity, rights, values and beliefs of those we serve.

  • Foster a learning environment for patient/families, nursing, and other members of the healthcare team including students.

  • Align practice with safety and quality. Be accountable for safety, identify and correct problems.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development; promote a culture of inquiry that explores, integrates and disseminates research and evidence based practice.

  • Lead and coordinate teams, delegate, coordinate care and collaborate with others as equal members of the inter-professional care team to integrate nursing knowledge.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Nursing degree/diploma required upon hire

  • All Registered Nurses without a Bachelor's of Nursing (BSN) degree or higher must obtain a BSN within 3 years of hire. RNs with 20 years of RN experience will not be required to obtain a BSN

  • Unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in state(s) of hire, and wherever care is delivered. If RN holds a multistate license through the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), the RN must adhere to the requirements of licensure in the new state(s) of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers upon hire

  • 12 months acute care experience working with the patient population similar to department of hire or completion of the specialty residency at the Alaska Medical Center

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelors of Nursing degree (BSN)
  • National certification in area of specialty

About the Rehab Unit 5W Rehab is a 10 bed inpatient Rehabilitation Facility within Providence. Rehab patients are generally considered medically stable, and must be able to tolerate 15 hours of intense therapy (PT, OT and ST) per week. Our patients come from within PAMC and from other hospitals within the state. Patients come to Rehab in order to recover from different diagnoses (stroke, spinal cord injury, orthopedic surgery, head injury, and /or multi-trauma). Assessments are done once per day (and PRN) and vital signs are done once per shift. Our nurse-patient ratio is 1:5 on day and night shift. We do self-scheduling and work 12 hour shifts.
