Nature of Work

The purpose of this job is to administer and monitor the worker's compensation program and coordinate the emergency evacuation program. The position also serves as administrative support for the Risk Management office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Manages the Workers' Compensation program for employees who suffer injuries/ illnesses resulting from the performance of job duties

  • Provides case management for workers' compensation claims; maintains accurate database records; audits invoices for accuracy; processes medical bill payments

  • Administers the regular and payroll functions of the Workers Compensation payroll; creates and monitors injury and accident reports; coordinates the Occupational Service Program for injured employees

  • Compiles, plans and assists with the analyzing of risk data, preparation of formal reports related to budgets, training, safety, risk management performance metrics and other reports needed to identify, analyze, evaluate and treat risk

  • Assists with the administration of the Safety Program as needed, up to and including training for required areas of MIOSHA/OSHA

  • Develops and prepares research instruction and informational guides for public and internal use

  • Assists with the coordination of the City's Emergency Management Evacuation Plan

  • Assists with conducting timely field and accident investigations and complaints as required

  • Attends meetings with other departments, employees, City officials and community organizations for the purpose of gathering information and to ensure Risk Management remains relevant and up-to-date

  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree or two (2) years of college courses in public administration and/or relevant employment study, or commensurate extensive work experience as a paraprofessional in a closely related field

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Certified Workers' Compensation Professional preferred

Other Necessary Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of modern government administration and organization

  • City Administrative policies

  • Laws and contractual agreements affecting Risk Management functions and operational understanding of Risk Management programs (i.e., workers' compensation, liability insurance, DOT requirements, integrated disability, and safety programs)

  • Financial recordkeeping and record management

  • City payroll and financial systems

  • English grammar, spelling, punctuation

  • Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping

  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment

Skill in:

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships

  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature

  • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios

Ability to:

  • Perform research, gather and analyze data and prepare reports

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Meet schedules and deadlines of the work

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions

  • Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files

  • Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
