Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, the main responsibility of this internship opportunity is to develop risk control and general insurance industry knowledge, and to assist in providing risk control support to home office leadership, commercial or construction field consultants, or staff within our specialist disciplines. We will have opportunities for this 10-12 week, paid position in multiple offices, including Hartford, CT (or the immediate area), St. Paul, MN and Charlotte, NC.

The assignments will be as follows:

  • Construction Intern: Hartford, CT
  • Field Intern: Hartford, CT
  • Field Intern: St. Paul, MN
  • Property Intern: Charlotte, NC

Internship responsibilities and activities involve working within a team environment and may focus on any of the following:

  • As an active member of the team, assisting in: preparing, conducting, and completing risk evaluations of client locations determining the potential hazards and risk factors to be considered in risk selection identifying uncontrolled hazards and making appropriate recommendations consulting with clients on ways to control hazards to help them reduce, mitigate, or prevent loss

  • Researching and applying technical information to support current risk control service efforts

  • Attending co-surveys with experienced Risk Control staff to learn and develop consulting skills

  • Collaborating with Underwriting, Claim, Clients, BI Business Partners and other Risk Control staff

  • Completing one Capstone project and presentation to senior management on a relevant Risk Control topic

  • Ensuring timely completion of assignments

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge

Seeking students who are actively pursuing a degree, typically with an expected graduation date of December 2020 or later.

Minimum Qualifications

GPA of 3.0 or higher in a relevant degree program: Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health, Allied Health, Fire Protection Engineering, Kinesiology, Construction Safety, Construction Management, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer and Digital Forensics, Civil or Industrial Engineering, Science or Business. Social Science and Humanities students with interest and aptitude will also be considered. Must be registered as a returning student and have completed related work studies.

The Information Security Controls and Risk Program Manager plays a critical role leading the risk identification and management process across all aspects of technology, lines of business, and third party service providers. Responsibilities will include assessing the adequacy of security process and controls, calculating the impact of potential adverse events, and facilitating risk mitigation planning. The successful candidate will raise security and risk awareness, provide security recommendations and enable risk informed decisions. Responsibilities include but not limited to: * Lead the key controls oversight program which includes control effectiveness testing, key control scope review and expansion. * Continuously work toward control enhancement, improved assessment, and monitoring. * Consult with and provide guidance to control owners, partners, and business leaders to safely enable business objectives. * Collaborate with Enterprise, Operational, and Security Risk teams to further develop risk practices including methodology, process, risk tolerance thresholds, and portfolio management. * Collaborate with the Director of Information Security Risk to further enhance security risk strategy. * Provide work guidance and coaching to team members working on security risk maturation and the key controls program. * Develop and maintain positive relationships with business and technology leaders, developers, architects and stakeholders to support and facilitate risk management practices. * Embrace and influence a culture of continuous improvement by evaluating, collaborating, and recommending program and service improvement opportunities. * Assist with development and maintenance of Information Security awareness and education materials and presentations. * Identify and collaborate on building additional security key performance and risk indicators to support increased security and risk awareness, understanding, and expectations. * Development and maintenance of documented Information Security policies, standards, and controls. * Share experience and guidance with the Information Security Risk Management team, mentor others to raise team knowledge, capability, and expertise. * Lead GRC platform enhancements for Information Security. Qualifications: * Ability to translate business requirements into security guidance aligning with standards and policy expectations. * Understanding of information security principles, standards, tools and methodologies. * Knowledgeable with Information Security Risk Management processes. * Strong communication including technical and business writing and presentation skills. * Resourceful, self-motivated, and possess strong critical thinking skills. (Analytical mindset) * Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills. * Must be flexible and be able to function in a fast paced and dynamic environment. * A minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of Information Security, IT, Technology Audit or related disciplines. * Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Possession of at least one relevant security or risk professional qualifications (e.g., CISSP, CCSK, CISA, CRISC, CISM, Open FAIR). Preferred Qualifications: * Familiarity with compliance mandates, security standards, and risk methodologies and taxonomies including those promoted by NIST, PCI DSS, ISO, HIPAA, ITGC, NY-DFS, FAIR. * Experience with developing and implementing Information Security policies and procedures. * Proficiency with consulting skills (client service orientation, conflict resolution, analysis/synthesis of information, negotiation, project management, etc.). * Comfort with presenting your work to audiences (20+ people) and facilitating discussion to support a partner decision. * Experience with the financial industry is a plus.
