As California's State Capital, Sacramento is home to more than a million in the city and region. It is a magnet for high tech industry and a hub for a major agricultural economy.

Sacramento has also been identified as one of the most diverse cities in the United States. Although there is much to be proud of, Sacramento has high rates of homelessness, crime, violence, poverty, food insecurity, low education test scores, and high number of youth in foster care. Daily, hundreds of community-based organizations serve our region's families and children but often lack resources or staff to do so.

Sacramento State is home to more than 30,000 undergraduate students, of which the majority are from the Sacramento region. While many campus departments and organizations have formed partnerships between the university and the community, there is no easy way for our students to find volunteer opportunities that serve the many nonprofit organizations in our region. The goal of the member is to better connect our students to our region's community-based organizations and Sacramento State students.

Our first VISTA already established relationships with student groups and staff on campus. The new member will continue to work with leaders from student organizations, campus departments, and community partners seeking volunteers. From the first VISTA's previous efforts, the new VISTA will implement a campus wide survey to identify strategies for promoting volunteerism and engagement among student organizations and the campus.

Further, the member will continue to collaborate with community partners to discuss their needs. The VISTA member will build on the work begun by the previous VISTA member to create a new section of the existing CEC database to include information about volunteer opportunities across campus and the Sacramento region.
