Job Description:

With the University's increasing attention to student support initiatives, this position will support all College of Engineering retention efforts aimed at underrepresented and at-risk student populations. The position will assist with development of the means by which to identify at-risk and under-represented students, co-create and implement intrusive pro-active advising programs, and collaborate with key faculty and college staff to meet the College's student success goals.

Retention Initiatives Counselor 1

50% General counseling and advising which provides academic and career guidance to at-risk and/or targeted student populations of the College of Engineering, which include but are not limited to: continuing students, first year students, student being admitted to the College from other colleges and universities, international students, prospective students, and re-entry students.

25% Implement and support the College of Engineering's at-risk and under-represented student initiatives, including, but not limited to: multiple at-risk calling projects, in-person outreach to vulnerable and select subsets of the engineering student population, collection and assessment of data so as to ascertain trends in the academic vulnerability of our students.

15% Work with Student Services staff, including counselors, coordinators, and career coach, along with additional college-wide staff, to administer retention initiatives to students, as well as success programs to our underrepresented students. Support and follow the direction of the Assistant Dean and Senior Counselor for Retention Initiatives in college efforts and projects. Collaborate with faculty through early reporting methods, as well as the CoE staff member responsible for retention-related data analysis.

5% At the direction of the Senior Counselor for Retention Initiatives, contribute to the annual report detailing the guiding principles working with vulnerable and under-represented students, retention methods, all retention-related activities/programs administered within the college and their analysis. Assist with presenting annual report findings to various college and university constituents when needed. Also contribute to the college-wide comprehensive retention plan.

5% Special projects and activities within the College of Engineering which may include, but are not limited to: 1) assisting with college/university diploma ceremonies; 2) assisting with recruitment activities; 3) orientation-related/Bengal Bound/Welcome Week activities; 4) other event for prospective and currently enrolled students; 5) remaining abreast of professional development through literature, seminars, organizations, and study of currenting advising and retention trends; 6) other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in counseling or related field social science or higher education field.

45% General counseling and advising which provides academic and career guidance to at-risk and/or targeted student populations of the College of Engineering, which include but are not limited to: continuing students, first year students, student being admitted to the College from other colleges and universities, international students, prospective students, and re-entry students.

Bachelor's degree and one year of related experience

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in counseling or related social science or higher education field, with specific experience working in an education setting with student populations.

As with all LSU employees, academic counselors have an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the academic counselor should immediately contact the CARE Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client/patient confidentiality.
