Position Title: District Manager

Department: Operations

Location and Travel: The applicant must reside in/or around Southern Tennessee, North Alabama or Middle Georgia and must be willing to travel 50% - 70% of the work week.

Position Purpose and Objectives

The America's Thrift Stores (ATS) District Manager role is not your typical District Management position because ATS is not your typical retailer. This position is both intricate and demanding, calling for a dynamic and positive leader. The ideal candidate will possess a combination of strategic acumen to drive business success, a hands-on approach to problem-solving, and a readiness to dive into the work. Alongside the essential analytical and tactical responsibilities, there's a crucial aspect of people management and talent development. The District Manager will oversee, mentor, motivate, develop, and empower a sizable team of associates to enhance their skills in business analysis, elevate customer service, and ensure smooth operational execution on a daily basis. The District Manager will assume various roles, including leading their district and contributing as a member of the broader ATS Leadership Team. They will be one of the ten individuals steering the company's overall direction. This role entails overseeing 250-300 employees spread across 4-8 stores, with direct management responsibility for 4-8 Store General Managers.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to established processing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and uphold retail merchandising standards consistently across all locations.

  • Effectively manage labor, productivity, and profitability, meeting set labor goals on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

  • Collaborate with store managers to establish and monitor sales and profit goals for each location. Develop strategies to attract and retain customers, driving revenue growth.

  • Implement and monitor district-wide budgets, approving expenses and managing operational budgets to ensure financial targets are met.

  • Execute strategic marketing initiatives and seasonal events to enhance brand visibility and drive customer engagement.

  • Ensure effective communication of company objectives across all levels. Guarantee compliance with safety regulations, loss prevention policies, and applicable laws.

  • Maintain exceptional customer service standards to enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty.

  • Provide oversight to ensure accuracy in reporting.

  • Offer leadership to the assigned district, overseeing operational activities and store performance.

  • Demonstrate strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills while interacting with all levels of management.

  • Ensure an exceptional onsite donor experience, fostering positive relationships with donors.

  • Analyze business opportunities and take proactive measures to improve areas of opportunity, enhancing overall performance.

  • Effectively manage performance through standardized performance and talent reviews, coaching, training, and corrective action.

  • Work closely with GMs to build a bench of ready-now candidates to support the ongoing growth of ATS.

  • Ensure all GMs in the District are being developed with the use of IDPs.

  • Recruit top talent and build a highly engaged team.

  • Aid in identifying Store General Managers with growth potential for advancement within the organization.

  • Partner with Human Resources and Asset Protection departments as needed to address various operational needs.

  • Schedule and lead regular meetings and conference calls to share information, set and revise goals, and boost team morale.

  • Participate in special projects or future initiatives as required.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in people leadership and development, with a track record of tangible achievements.

  • Previous experience in operational and retail leadership within established thrift store chains such as Savers, Unique, Value Village, or similar, ideally in roles like Store General Manager or District Manager with oversight of multiple units preferred. Alternatively, expertise in managing hourly production and/or retail employees, with exposure to multi-shift operations if lacking thrift experience.

  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of conveying complex concepts clearly and concisely through both written and verbal means, with a high energy level.

  • Strong leadership qualities, coupled with organizational prowess and effective planning abilities.

  • Ability to cultivate a collaborative team environment within the district, fostering peer relationships and enhancing capabilities across all stores.

  • Proficient in independent problem-solving and analytical thinking, with a knack for innovative solutions.

  • Demonstrates tactful interaction with peers, subordinates, and customers, maintaining professionalism at all times.

  • Collaborates with employees at all levels to identify areas for improvement and implement process enhancements.

  • Exhibits an exceptional work ethic, characterized by reliability and dependability.

Expected Year 3-5 Outcomes

  • Achieve a yearly increase in comparable store revenue of at least 3% - 5%.

  • Enhance the skills and capabilities of store management teams.

  • Foster a culture of accountability within the organization.

  • Implement effective recruiting, hiring, and onboarding procedures.

  • Decrease turnover rates by 20%.

  • Identify, train, and nurture 2-5 internal management successors to strengthen the talent pipeline for future store expansions.

  • Assist in pinpointing potential locations for upcoming store expansions.

  • Oversee the set-up and launch of 1-3 new stores.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Retail Management, or a related field preferred.

  • Proven experience in retail management, with a minimum of 5-10 years in a district or multi-unit management role.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license in good standing and have access to reliable transportation.

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve goals.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.

  • Sound financial acumen and experience in budget management.

  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and retail management software.
