Restore-L Client Berthing Subsystem Lead (Job Number:440303)

Description:

SAIC is seeking a senior-level mechanical engineer and manager on the NASA OMES II contract in support of the Restore-L program in the Satellite Servicing Projects Division (SSPD) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

The engineer will lead the Restore-L Client Berthing System team. The CBS is the Restore-L subsystem responsible for developing the technology and hardware required to berth with the uncooperative client satellite. Once Restore-L is berthed with the servicing client, the robot arms are free to perform the tasks required to refuel the client spacecraft on orbit.

The engineer and manager will oversee and be responsible for the design and development of the CBS subsystem. The engineer will leverage their extensive knowledge and expertise in space-flight hardware and mechanisms, as well as mechanical systems engineering and management.

Specific duties will include, but are not be limited to: performing and overseeing concept trades, concept design and detailed design of spaceflight mechanical systems and their components. The engineer will also provide and oversee the flight fabrication, assembly and testing services, including the development of engineering test units.

The engineer must have experience in the selection, design and integration & test of mechanical systems, preferably in the aerospace industry. The engineer will be responsible for the workforce, budget, and schedule of the subsystem and provide regular status on progress, risks, and issues to Restore-L management. The engineer will be responsible for developing documentation and materials for NASA reviews (critical design review, program status review, etc.).

Requirements:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from accredited institution our four years experience in lieu of degree

  • Seventeen (17) years or more experience

  • Experience in mechanical design, engineering, and test for space-flight hardware

  • Experience in mechanism design, engineer, and test for space-flight hardware

The engineer will lead the Restore-L Video Distribution and Storage Unit team. The VDSU is Restore-L's reconfigurable, fault-tolerant system that controls and receives video from Restore-L's digital cameras and other sensors, acts as a video router, provides simultaneous JPEG2000 compression on multiple sources, and provides solid-state-data-recording functionality. The electrical engineer and manager will oversee and be responsible for the design and development of the VDSU subsystem. Specific responsibilities will include: * Lead small team of FPGA, hardware, and software engineers through all phases of instrument development, including requirements capture and development, design definition, implementation, testing, formal V&V delivery, and maintenance. * Manage the workforce, budget, and schedule of the subsystem and provide regular status on progress, risks, and issues to Restore-L management. * Provide technical guidance in all aspects of the design and development of the VDSU hardware * Define system-level computational architectures, covering device selection (specifically processors, FPGA, memory, and nonvolatile storage) and communications throughout the instrument data system. * Work with project engineers and scientists to define and refine concepts-of-operations. * Design and development of software, FPGA, and hardware EGSE to be used in support of testing and verifying FPGA implementations. * Testing and debugging FPGAs in a mixed hardware/software environment, verifying existing FPGA designs for high reliability applications, spacecraft interface, housekeeping data collection, health and safety data collection and handling, and instrument interfaces. * Provide technical support to conduct all aspects of complex signal processing synthesis and testing on designs implemented on FPGAs. * Solve complex and challenging computer engineering application problems and provide critical FPGA engineering application capabilities needed for the development of the flight instruments. Qualifications: Requirements: * BS in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Systems Engineer, SW Engineering, or equivalent from accredited institution and fifteen (15) years or more of experience. * Broad range of experience and extensive knowledge in the following areas: digital systems, embedded systems, FPGA development (design, implementation, simulation and verification), implementation of data processing and control architectures in a mixed hardware/software environment, bus drivers, FPGA device drivers and simulation of the Spacecraft interfaces. * Experience designing instrument computational systems, defining data and control flow through discrete electronics components, FPGA, microprocessors, and ground data systems, based on high-level project needs. * Experience working with project system engineering and system leads in performing design trades. * Experience designing versatile and agile systems that are flexible and robust to changing and fluid project requirements. * Experience managing and reporting project financials, status, and schedules.
